Position Overview: The School Health Office Assistant supports the school health office by performing a variety of health-related and clerical duties. This role is essential in promoting the health and well-being of students, ensuring compliance with health regulations, and providing necessary support to the school health office.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Health and First Aid:
- Assess injuries and perform first aid.
- Provide care to students with health needs.
- Administer medications as prescribed.
- Implement health care plans/emergency care plans for students with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies according to physician orders.
2. Health Information Management:
- Maintain accurate health information and student immunization records in compliance with state immunization laws.
- Keep electronic logs for student visits, care incidents, accidents, and medication administration.
- Collect and maintain student health data, including immunization records and screenings for vision and hearing.
3. Communication and Coordination:
- Contact parents/guardians as per district protocols.
- Keep teachers and relevant staff informed about students with special health needs.
- Communicate and collaborate with student support services, administrators, teachers, and parents/guardians to plan and implement accommodations for students with learning difficulties.
- Communicate with parents regarding student IEP health questionnaires via email or phone.
4. Health Education and Training:
- Provide health education materials and resources to teachers and staff.
- Educate students individually to assist them in making health-related decisions and developing self-care skills.
- Conduct and maintain staff health training sessions.
5. Clerical Duties:
- Perform clerical tasks such as filing, copying, distributing materials, answering/monitoring phones, and responding to emails.
- Submit necessary reports and order requisitions for supplies.
- Maintain health office cleanliness and organization
- Maintain and manage a calendar of assessments and IEP meetings to ensure timely submission of health portions.
6. Health Policy and Safety:
- Assist in the development and revision of school district health policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Identify and report environmental health and safety hazards for students and staff.
- Monitor and document incidents of infectious diseases.
7. Professional Development:
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Attend monthly online MNDH webinars.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or certification in health-related fields is preferred.
- Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a school environment.
- Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR.
- Strong organizational and clerical skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with students, parents, and staff.
- Proficiency in using electronic health records and basic office software.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
- Capacity to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Working Conditions:
- The position is based in the school health office, with occasional activities around the school premises.
- The role involves working with children who have various health needs and conditions.
- May require occasional participation in off-site professional development activities.
