Job Summary
The Health Information Management Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) Department in coordination with the Director of Performance Improvement. Daily operations may include: the release of information, record processing, physician's deficiencies, scanning, and coordinating HIM coverage and services.
Duties:
- Provides oversight, guidance and work flow of all Health Information Management staff in the hospitals.
- Identifies and implements changes regarding policy, productivity and quality measures, and assures that staff performance improvements related to work-flow efficiencies and operations.
- In coordination with the Director of Performance Improvement, recruits, interviews and makes recommendations to fill personnel vacancies
- Coordinates staffing issues and procedural issues with Director of Performance Improvement.
- In coordination with the Director of Performance Improvement, evaluates staff performance on an annual basis. Accurately measures and evaluates staff performance, productivity and quality measures, and assures that staff is following and meeting departmental standards.
- In coordination with the Director of Performance Improvement, provides feedback, evaluates and provides corrective action to staff as needed.
- Responds to inquiries of staff, vendors and the public for the purpose of providing information and/or direction, discussing and resolving any issues and/or problems
- Ensures staff maintain a positive customer service attitude
- Prepares, oversees and approves work schedules.
- Coordinates and assists with coverage for call-ins / staff leave and during critical staff shortage.
- Verifies and approves time cards.
- Interacts as a team member representing Health Information Management and attends meetings as directed.
- Coordinates and oversees medical records audits by Health Information staff to maintain the integrity of the medical record.
- Works with the Director of Performance Improvement to schedule and development ongoing education and training for newly hired and existing HIM staff.
- Leads the process of medical records requests, including the review and submission of records to payer sources of inpatient hospital services.
- Coordinates services provided by the contracted RHIT.
- Maintains knowledge of the EMR and reporting functions that support the HIM role.
- Assists with special projects as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Computer skills required
- Proficiency in the organization's Electronic Medical Record documentation system is required
Experience:
- At least three years experience in an acute care facility with experience directly related to Health Information Management
- Knowledge of EMR systems and interfaces that directly related to the import of documents in the medical record.
- At least 3 years of medical record auditing, education and training of staff related to Health Information Management, and electronic medical record documentation.
- Previous Management/Supervisor experience preferred but not required.
Certifications:
- RHIA or RHIT is preferred but not required
