What does the Math & Science Teacher do? (including but not limited to)
The Teacher is responsible for fostering a nurturing learning environment while adapting teaching methods to meet the unique emotional, behavioral, and educational needs of the students. The teacher works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to support the therapeutic goals of the students while promoting academic progress and personal growth.
Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities (including but not limited to)
- Coordinate the school/education component for The Maples Fort Worth location.
- Request and gather school plans/information from guardians prior to admission.
- Help guardians and schools navigate the process of transitioning from in-person to online school and then back to in person school after discharge.
- Communicate regularly with schools, online platforms, parents, and guidance counselors.
- Track and manage residents’ progress in coursework (daily).
- Prepare weekly summaries of residents’ school performance/behavior for therapists and clinical directors.
- Hire and manage tutors (expectations, calendars, time sheets).
- Help plan and staff (summer) enrichment program for residents who don’t have school in the summer.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, Special Education, Psychology, or a related field (master’s preferred).
- Certification in teaching (specific state certifications may be required).
- Training in trauma-informed teaching practices or experience in a therapeutic environment is highly desirable.
- Experience working with children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional disorders, particularly in a residential, therapeutic, or psychiatric setting.
- Experience with special education, IEP development, and academic assessments.
Physical Demands:
This job requires employees to have a full range of physical capabilities, including the ability to handle and lift patients, demonstrate manual and finger dexterity, and maintain good eye-hand coordination. Employees must be able to stand and walk for extended periods and occasionally lift and carry items up to 40 lbs. Corrected vision and hearing within the normal range are also required.
