What are the responsibilities and job description for the COBOL Developer / COBOL Programmer position at Beacon Hill?
We're supporting a global logistics and supply chain organization that plays a key role in the movement of goods worldwide-by air, ocean, and ground. Their technology teams are responsible for building and maintaining the systems that keep these operations running efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with international regulations.
They're currently seeking a COBOL Developer to design, enhance, and support transactional components within a mission-critical logistics system. This developer will join an Agile Scrum team and work closely with internal stakeholders to solve real-world challenges through thoughtful code and collaboration.
This is a full-time, onsite role based in the greater Seattle area.
Required Skills:
COBOL programming (3 years) - good syntax knowledge and real-world coding experience
Software Development Background - ideally with a focus beyond traditional mainframe environments and a solid understanding of the full software development lifecycle.
Experience with other programming languages - background in Java or other object-oriented languages (e.g., C , C#, Python) to show adaptable and transferable coding skills
Experience in modern dev environments:
Visual Studio Code (VS Code)
GitHub / GitLab
Azure DevOps (ADO) or Jira
MobaXterm
UNIX command basics
Agile/Scrum or SAFe methodology - experience working in team-based sprints and planning cycles
Nice to have skills:
SQL and general data analysis skills
Experience with HP COBOL, Fresche AMXW, or ORDAT Ti2SQL
Familiarity with PostgreSQL
Integration between systems (middleware/interfaces)
Operating systems experience: UNIX, Linux, Windows
BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
Background with large transactional systems, accounting, or compliance layers
Experience in CI/CD workflows (Epic → Feature → Story format)
Familiarity with legacy modernization or emulator environments (e.g., HP3000)
