Description
Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to assist with the coordination and implementation of transportation projects and program as a principal design engineer. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
Serves as principal design engineer, assuming responsibility for the preparation of finished plans, specifications, property acquisition and construction for public infrastructure improvements in assigned area of responsibility.
Performs complex professional engineering work for public improvements including streets, drainage systems, and other engineering projects which includes the preparation of estimates, computational and design duties, and the creation of plans and specifications.
Utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems to produce engineering drawings utilizing complex drafting and design procedures.
Utilizes appropriate design standards and related reference information to establish profiles, cross sections, drafts, or other compilation forms to compile data used in preparing engineering specifications.
Maintains County design, construction standards, and specifications.
Prepares reports, makes presentations, and maintains accurate records, notes, and other required documentation for assigned projects.
Meets and confers with contractors, public officials, neighborhood groups, outside agencies, advisory committees, citizens, and civic organizations regarding engineering issues and projects for assigned area of responsibility.
Performs related work as assigned.
Supplemental Information
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
Six (6) years of related experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must be familiar with South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) design standards and permitting, Environmental permitting to include SCDES and USACE, and Beaufort County standards for design and stormwater.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
EIT or EI certificate is required.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
