Job Summary:
The County Attorney will report directly to the County Administrator and will perform professional and supervisory work advising the County Administrator, County Council, and other county departments, boards, commissions, and agencies on legal matters. The County Attorney will also represent Beaufort County in court when necessary and oversee legal staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal counsel on various county matters and represent the county in litigation.
- Prepare, review, and edit legal documents such as contracts, deeds, resolutions, ordinances, and more.
- Monitor new legislation and ensure compliance with applicable laws.
- Advise on economic development, zoning, and public finance issues.
- Supervise professional and clerical staff in the Legal Department.
- Assist in handling employment and grievance matters in collaboration with Human Resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Juris Doctor degree.
- Experience: 8-10 years of experience in the practice of law, with a minimum of 5 years in local government law (South Carolina county government experience preferred).
- Certifications: Must be licensed to practice law in South Carolina and Rule 403 certified.
- Other Requirements: Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
