REPORTS TO : Assistant Superintendent of Business Services & Payroll / Risk Manager

CLASSIFICATION : Classified

WORK YEAR : 12 Months

SALARY SCHEDULE : 200 Column : 38

Salary Range (16) :

  • 24.78 to $33.91
  • per hour
  • EXPERIENCE CREDIT : A maximum of two (2) years may be granted for experience outside the Beaumont Unified School District. Therefore, and external new hire's maximum starting salary for this position is $26.80 per hour (Range 16 / Step 3).

BASIC FUNCTION :

Under supervision of the Payroll / Risk Supervisor, performs payroll and financial record-keeping and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Under supervision, prepare payrolls for data entry and distribution; verify time records, signatures, authorization, budget codes and related information; audit time cards for errors and double entry; post and maintain payroll records, including changes, adjustments and deductions
  • Receive and compute certificated and classified payrolls; process and assure accuracy of deductions for income tax, retirement and health insurance; prepare, code and enter payroll
  • Make computations and changes to financial data; calculate and make adjustments for PERS, STRS and alternative retirement plans as required; set up and make changes to credit unions, bank, TSA accounts and other accounts for employees
  • Research and prepare a variety of payroll-related reports
  • Work closely with Personnel Services
  • Handle job verification questions
  • Data entry of employee records
  • Sorts, distributes and files forms, documents, correspondence and similar paperwork following specific procedures
  • TYPICAL TASKS :

  • Under supervision, prepare payrolls for data entry and distribution
  • Assist with processing and inputting of healthcare benefits, voluntary deductions
  • Data entry of employee records
  • Sort, distribute and file forms, documents, correspondence and similar paperwork, following specific procedures
  • Type statistical reports, financial statements and similar technical matters, following standard forms, procedures or policies
  • Other duties as assigned and / or requested
  • QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE :

    Knowledge of :

  • Correct English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and math
  • Methods, practices and terminology used in payroll and bookkeeping
  • Rules, regulations and procedures of PERS / STRS Retirement Systems
  • Basic business office procedures and general accounting procedures
  • Filing, record-keeping and office machines relating to payroll
  • Ability To :

  • Pass District written administered test and type 30 words per minute
  • Perform responsible duties related to payroll record-keeping; compile, organize, tabulate and file data
  • Maintain detailed records for a variety of classified, certificated or substitute personnel
  • Perform a variety of basic clerical work and complex arithmetical calculations with accuracy
  • Use computer and related software programs
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Perform a full range of payroll support duties to meet payroll and other deadlines
  • Work in a confidential manner regarding fringe benefits, payroll and personnel matters
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Learn new procedures and equipment operation
  • Perform a full range of payroll support duties to meet payroll deadlines
  • Training and Experience :

    Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade; two years of general office clerical experience, including work with payroll, insurance, financial, statistical or similar duties requiring use of arithmetic and accurate record keeping.

    Personal Qualities :

    Patience, flexibility, good judgment and willingness to learn operation of office equipment and new procedures. Good attendance required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS : Environment :

    Office environment; subject to constant interruptions.

    Physical Abilities :

    Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment, lifting objects weighing up to 30 pounds, seeing to read and assure the accuracy of payroll and financial records and documents, and hearing and speaking to exchange information.
