SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST BASIC FUNCTION: The purpose of Speech and Language Pathologist is done for the purpose/s of improving students’ communication and success in the academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students’ specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. FUNCTIONS: Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment. Assesses students’ social needs (e.g. behavioral, motor development, communication, etc.), academic needs, progress, expectations, goal, etc. (e.g. development level, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating students and family requirements, placements and success of the program. Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum. Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students. Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study. Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and an optimal learning environment. Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and /or providing information. Prepares teaching materials and related reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The ability to implement behavior modification techniques and classroom management skills in order to produce desirable student behaviors. Identify and provide remedial services for children handicapped by impairments of speech; serve as a resource person to school personnel and community agencies; aware of current trends in the field of communication disorders and continuously upgrades assessment and therapy skills ABILITY to write behaviorally stated goals/objectives for particular areas of instruction in IEP/IIEP format; ability to develop and provide a wide variety of activities and tasks in order to meet program objectives; ability to maintain proper discipline and control; ability to develop effective interpersonal skills with parents, children, and staff; ability to understand and utilize appropriate evaluation instruments; ability to be responsive to needs and concerns of parents and to encourage their participation in their child’s program; ability to communicate effective with parents, pupils and staff; ability to assess the language development nonverbal children; ability to speak Spanish desirable. RESPONSIBILITY: Provides assessment services to identify children who have communication disorders; develops a program to remedial disorders of speech through individual or small group therapy, coordination with a classroom teacher and parent conferences. EXPERIENCE: Evidence of successful supervised experience working with communicatively handicapped elementary school age children. EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an accredited College/University. CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid California Teaching Credential authorizing Speech Therapy in public schools.

A Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) recruited to work in the District shall be given a one-time $15,000 signing bonus over three years. The signing bonus will be paid out at $5,000 a year upon completion of a full year of service. No part of the signing bonus shall be prorated. New hire Speech and Language Pathologists may be granted years of experience up to the maximum years on salary schedule (current max = step 21).
