MUSIC TEACHER (INSTRUMENTAL OR VOCAL) 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:   

  1. Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.
  2. Must hold an appropriate Alabama Professional Educator Certificate.
  3. Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the assigned task.
  4. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment as required by the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Background Check Required: (HB 402 ACT 99-361 Alabama Legislature) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Investigation.

REPORTS TO:  Principal

 

JOB GOALS:  To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Applicable to All Employees:

 

  • Attend on a regular and predictable basis.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
  • Uphold Board policies, including the anti-harassment program.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with students, teachers, staff, supervisors, and the public.
  • Work effectively and efficiently under time and productivity standards.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Report for duty fifteen minutes before the opening of school and remain fifteen minutes after the close of school.
  2. Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and vocal music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to secondary students.  Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  3. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  4. Establishes a positive classroom climate and effectively manages music education instruction within that environment. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
  6. Organizes and controls the storage and use of school owned instruments and property, controls the use of materials, equipment, and instruments to prevent loss, abuse, or injury.
  7. Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  8. Develop lessons and lesson plans making use of instructional materials and, provide individual and small group instruction in adopting the curriculum to the needs of each student
  9. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during class, practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
  10. Evaluates each student’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  11. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  12. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  13. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  14. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  15. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  16. Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
  17. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations at the times designated.
  18. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided and appropriate to the interests and maturity of the students.
  19. Establish and maintain appropriate discipline in the classroom and assist staff in the establishment and maintenance of discipline in the school environment.
  20. Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal at the local school.
  21. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, board policy, and administrative regulation.
  22. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis and in accordance with the system's established procedures.
  23. Seek the assistance of specialists as needed and make referrals when appropriate.
  24. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to safeguard all equipment, materials, and facilities.
  25. Make reasonable provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day. Faculty and administration will mutually agree upon procedures for such conferences.
  26. Work with other staff members in planning school activities, instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  27. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  28. All teachers participate in extracurricular activities as mutually agreed upon by faculty and administration.
  29. Attend and participate regularly in faculty meetings.
  30. Maintain a professional, cooperative working relationship with parents and the community.
  31. Promote good public relations for schools and the school system with the public.
  32. Maintain and improve professional competence.
  33. Perform other related duties during school necessary to the safe and effective operation of the school when requested by the principal. 

 

Essential Physical Demands:

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: band room, classrooms, gym, auditorium, and recreational areas, both at home and away events. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment such band equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips and various performances may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs students may be necessary. Regular contact with students to provide a positive learning environment is required. Contact with administrators, staff members, parents, and community members are required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.

 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move a minimum of 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary, stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

The environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the job and are not meant to be all-inclusive. Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.

 

Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Exposure to heated/air-conditioned and ventilated facilities. Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment. Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.

 

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, communicate, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills and compile. Occasionally required to copy and negotiate.

 

EMPLOYMENT: This is a nine-month contract (187 days).  Based on the board-approved salary schedule.

 

EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of Professional Personnel.
