Position Summary
The formulator is a subject matter expert in formulation of personal care, skincare or cosmetic products. This includes all aspects of a formula's development including but not limited to stability, regulatory, production scale up and safety assessments. The formulator works individually and as part of a team to develop new, innovative and marketable products for a wide range of customer brands. This person supports the management of projects and conducts hands-on formulation of personal care and cosmetic products. Working cross-functionally with Sales, Project management, Operations, Quality, the formulator drives growth of the company though new product development and process improvements. They work closely with Stability Chemists to ensure the long-term quality of their develop and generate regulatory documents as required for product registration.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties
- Works in a safe manner in the laboratory and ensure a clean and organized workspace.
- Creates new, innovative formulas for the personal care, skincare and/or cosmetic market.
- Manages projects and conduct hands-on formulation of personal care and cosmetic products.
- Transform market trends, customer feedback and design concepts into technology.
- Benchmark and reverse engineer prototype products.
- Independently create and refine formulas that align to the plants manufacturing capabilities.
- Test and develop procedures for customer tech transfer projects.
- Perform calculations and assessments to convert laboratory scale formula to large scale for manufacturing.
- Must assist in Process Development and trouble shooting in compounding; Perform pilot batches for new products and tech transfers with the support of Commercialization.
- Identify and troubleshoot problems with formulations.
- Observes, records, investigates, duplicates and validates successful procedures.
- Understand and develop testing and validation protocols to support Validation Engineering.
- Uses GDP to write procedures, BOM, specifications, corrections, and investigations.
- Work with Stability chemists to conduct stability and compatibility testing of products under development, establishing appropriate testing strategy to ensure specification is met.
- Generate documents required for product registration such as Master Formula, Process Instructions, Bulk Material Specifications, Registration, Ingredient Declaration, and other documents the customer requires.
- Perform testing, or coordinate with Quality to perform testing, of new OTC formulas.
- Trains and mentors’ junior formulators to ensure success of the team.
- Completes and documents required training based on job position as illustrated by training matrix.

Qualifications
Technical Skills Required
- Knowledge of global cosmetic regulations and understanding of regulatory monographs and standards.
- Functional knowledge of OTC testing requirements, protocols and development timelines
- In depth understanding of personal care formulas and stability testing/protocols that ensure long term quality.
- Understanding of Packaging Compatibility and how it relates to products.
- In depth understand of Good Document Practices and how they relate to GLP and GMP.
- Functional knowledge of common processing equipment.
- Ability to interpret data to create formula specifications for Operations and Quality.
- Understanding of Safety Data Sheets and how to evaluate raw materials and formulas for safety.
- Efficient in MS-Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Strong attention to detail.
- Must be able to work as a team player.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience Required
- BS/BA in Chemistry or related Science, or AS with applicable work experience
- 5 years formulation experience in consumer products and cosmetics industry.
- Experience with formulating topical OTC products.
- Experience with bench top to pilot scale-up.
Physical Requirements
- Stand/remain upright for long periods of time.
- Bend, squat, kneel, turn, and stoop.
- Able to lift up to 25 pounds and manipulate up to 600lb drums to pull Raw Material from inventory.
- Ability to work and function safely in a Laboratory environment.
- Must be able to discern differences in color.
