CLASS DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Deputy Warden
DEPARTMENT (S): Jail
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under the direction of the Warden, the purpose of the position is to administer and manage the custody, care and control of Beaver County Jail inmates and working with the Warden to oversee the daily operations of the Jail. Employees in this classification perform administrative and supervisory work. Position is responsible for managing correctional staff; developing and implementing jail policies and procedures in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and standards, preparing department budget, and monitoring contract. Performs related work as directed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Will work under the direction of the Warden (agree to disagree while supporting each other)
· Assist where needed
· Must know and understand Title 37 requirements
· Oversee implementation of any changes to Policy or Procedures.
· Complete the “State” Audits with the assistance of chosen Supervisors.
· Will supervise the Captain, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Clerical staff in the Facility.
· Complete Supervisor’s Schedule including rotations, days off, vacations and pairing,
· Call off’s and request for usage of four and/or eight-hour vacation are approved by you no matter the time of day or night.
· Be advised of all medical emergency requiring trips to Hospital and/or attempted /completed Suicides in order to keep Warden & Medical Administrator abreast of the Situation.
· Keep file on all Suicide and Psych Observation Releases
· Schedule and hold Supervisor Meetings.
· Attend Prison Board Meetings.
· Assist with yearly Volunteer Training setting up dates. Compiling approved lists of Support Staff after submitting and receiving Criminal Histories.
· Oversee all disciplinary issues of Correctional Officer and/or Middle Management Staff; ensuring that each write-up will be handled in a fair and professional way.
· Assign and assist when needed Supervisors to maintain all Officers’ “Disciplinary” files.
· Oversee implementation of “Absent Control” Policy for Staff.
· Receive, approve, or deny written “Shift Trade Request” forms submitted by the Correctional Officers. (When applicable)
· Will ensure that approved “Shift Trade Request” are submitted to the Supervisor’s for schedule change entries.
· Respond as quickly as possible to any Offender Request forms.
· As does the Warden approve and schedule “Special Visits”
· Generate “Gate Passes” after approving meetings and/or visits between Professional’s or Law Enforcement Personnel and Offenders.
· Be the liaison between appropriate Law Enforcement Agencies and Offender Informants.
· Coordinate with Maintenance Manager on any “Emergency Maintenance” procedure that would require a Lockdown of the Facility, passing on same information to the Shift Supervisor.
· Collect for the Warden’s approval all Correctional Officer’s Vacation request.
· Oversee and schedule all Clerical Staff within the Facility.
· Will complete any other assignments designated by the Warden.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Psychology, Sociology or related Humanities field or closely related field preferred. A minimum of five (5) years previous experience that includes progressive corrections and supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to synthesize, hypothesize, and/or theorize concerning data and/or information involving modification of existing policies, strategies and/or methods to meet unique or unusual conditions. Requires the ability to do so within the context of existing organizational theories and management principles.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to function in a director capacity for a major organizational unit requiring significant internal and external interaction.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or synthesis functions. Ability to deal with several concrete and abstract variables and to analyze major problems that require complex planning for interrelated activities that can span one or several work units.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.
Physical Ability: Tasks may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of up to 50 pounds. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to violence, disease and pathogenic substances.
