Full-Time Permanent Archaeological Field Director

At BCA, we specialize in cultural resource projects throughout the central-western United States, with a focus on the Great Plains region. As a Field Director, you will play a critical role in leading field surveys, excavations, and data collection, while mentoring teams and contributing to advancing cultural resource management initiatives.

Position Overview
This position is based out of our Bismarck, ND office and offers a minimum 40-hour workweek during regular business hours (Central Time Zone), with opportunities for overtime as project demands arise. Overtime is paid at time and a half.
Compensation and Benefits:

• Competitive Pay: Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.

• Paid Time Off (PTO): Enjoy paid time off to balance work and personal life. PTO is accrued annually and distributed in one lump sum the following year, based on the number of years of service.
• Field Boot Reimbursement Program: Stay equipped with our reimbursement program for field boots. After one year of service, full time field staff are eligible to receive an annual stipend towards the purchase of new field boots. Receipt required.
• Subsistence Allotments: For long workdays (10 hours) and those with overnight stays, we offer a $60.00 per day subsistence allotment, added to your paycheck. No receipts necessary.
• Lodging: Single-occupancy hotel accommodations are provided for field assignments requiring overnight stays. However, for times when you are not actively working on field assignments, you would be responsible for securing your own lodging.
• Transportation: A company field vehicle will be provided for transportation to and from project areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Project Leadership: Direct and participate in archaeological field surveys, excavations, and site monitoring with advanced knowledge of field techniques.
• Team Management: Supervise and mentor field technicians, fostering collaboration and ensuring productivity.
• Data Collection: Oversee archaeological and historical site documentation, mapping, and field data analysis to support comprehensive site interpretations.
• Collaboration: Work closely with project leaders, fellow field members, and the office to ensure efficient project execution and successful achievement of objectives.
• Safety Oversight: Enforce safety protocols to maintain a secure work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field (or equivalent field experience) along with completion of an archaeological field school or similar training program.
• At least one year of archaeological fieldwork experience, with some project management responsibilities.
• Strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills, with attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
• Demonstrated proficiency in artifact analysis, mapping, and site documentation.
• Ability to work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions and terrains.
• Effective communication skills with English proficiency in both spoken and written formats.
• Valid Driver's license with a clean driving record.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work long hours in diverse weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, and direct sunlight.
• Stamina for extended periods of walking and hiking, often while carrying field equipment.
• Ability to visually assess maps, GPS devices, and artifacts with precision and care.
• Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of tools, gear, and artifacts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous extended experience working in North Dakota, eastern Montana, and/or Great Plains.
• Proficiency with GPS and mapping tools.
• Familiarity with the historical and archaeological context of the Northern Plains region.
• Experience with CRM principles and compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Previous experience in a similar role at this capacity.
