Description
The Application Engineer Team Lead reports to the Regional Sales Manager, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Director of Application Engineering. This position will be responsible for both team leadership of the regional Application Engineers and the functions of an Application Engineer in the assigned territory. This individual must have a deep understanding of industrial automation equipment including, but not limited to PLCs, motion control, robotics, fieldbus systems, and HMIs, as well as working collaboratively in a customer facing, team selling environment.
The Application Engineer Team Lead collaborates with the sales and engineering teams to develop and execute team selling strategies. They are responsible for the technical win, securing the customer’s confidence and trust in Beckhoff products and technologies. The Application Engineering Team Lead does this by bringing Beckhoff technology to life, sparking innovation through customer engagement; whiteboarding, technology discussions, and product demonstrations.

  • Assist the Regional Sales Manager with the following items: 
    • Application Engineering team member evaluation, utilization, and new position needs.
    • Create and implement Application Engineer development plans for each team member, using the skills assessment to guide the plans.
  • Work in partnership with the Director of Application Engineering. 
    • Identify and implement best practices and processes within the assigned region.
    • Implement skills assessment program with the AE team in the region.
    • Review and maintain demo inventory strategy for the region.
  • Coach and mentor regional team members on AE technical capabilities, SE technology conceptual understanding, and other similar skillset development.
  • When needed, lead communication and allocation for engineering and support resources for key customer opportunities. Participate as part of a virtual sales team as a technical expert in important sales opportunities.
  • Ensure our Beckhoff engineering culture continues to flourish.
  • Ongoing Application Engineer responsibilities include the following: 
    • Empower and guide customers during prototype and development.
    • Proactively drive technical issues to resolution.
    • Develop and give discovery-driven product demonstrations.
    • Provide technical input on project proposals and BOM (Bill of Materials).
    • Advise customers on proper selection, use, maintenance, and training of technology for specific applications.
    • Must be able to document and record all activity using established methods and tools.

Travel
This position requires regular travel amounting to approximately 25%. This could include 15% national and international travel (Asia and Europe) of up to three weeks at a time.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science in Business, Engineering or related technical field from a four-year college or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with programming languages IEC 61131-3 (object oriented extension), C#, C , etc. Python, objective C programming knowledge a plus.
  • Understanding of PLCs, motion control, robotics, distributed I/O, fieldbus systems (EtherCAT) and HMI technologies.
  • Experience with Windows, IT networking and Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Self-starter with a results-driven personality.
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills to participate in a fast-paced, action-oriented team.
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment while maintaining professionalism.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present to customers, companywide, and/or at departmental meetings.
