Job Summary:
This position is responsible for repairing, replacing, maintaining, and installing doors, locks, keys, and related equipment to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of schools. Additionally, the role involves supporting general maintenance staff and tradespeople in carrying out various maintenance activities.
Essential Duties
- Troubleshoots, installs, repairs, and re-keys all types of manual and electronic locks and locking systems, as found on: interior doors, exterior doors, desks, cabinets, and safes.
- Troubleshoots, installs, and repairs various doors and door hardware, to include: hinges, closers, panic bars, door jambs, doors, garage doors, folding curtains.
- Receives, responds to, and completes work orders in a timely fashion.
- Routinely inspects facilities and systems to determine where door equipment repair or replacement is needed.
- Maintains records of time and expenditures as directed.
- Performs preventative maintenance on locking mechanisms.
- Organizes, implements, and/or maintains a master key system and records for new and existing facilities.
- Orders and maintains an appropriate inventory of supplies/materials.
- Installs and/or oversees contractor installation of electronic access systems (electrical locksets, electrical release/strike, magnetic locks and computer-based systems).
- Assists the Construction & Projects Coordinator by providing keying information and specifications for any renovations or new construction.
- Prepares cost estimates.
- Manages and oversees an inventory of tools, ensuring their proper operation and maintenance.
- Reports to severe weather and other building related emergencies, including broken doors or door systems, that may occur outside the normal work day.
- Strong verbal and communication skills.
- Demonstrates the ability to stay adaptable and effective in a dynamic environment, with strong problem-solving skills and the capability to multitask under pressure.
- Carries out additional tasks as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to a high school diploma.
- At least five years of mechanical and/or maintenance experience.
- Must have or be able to acquire Virginia DCJS locksmith training and licensing within 90 days of employment.
- Preferred experience in maintaining doors, locks, and related equipment.
- A valid state driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is required and must be maintained.
Physical Demands
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
