Position Summary
This position is multifaceted and performs intermediate semiskilled work in the maintenance of the Welcome Center building and grounds. Performs a variety of custodial and other miscellaneous duties to ensure that the Welcome Center is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner for all guests and visitors. Meets and greets visitors and provides information that is requested. This position will have extensive contact with the public and should have a professional appearance and demeanor. The Welcome Center is open seven days a week; this position will be required to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform opening and closing duties of the Welcome Center as scheduled.
- Make minor repairs to the building, electrical, and plumbing facilities.
- Perform grounds maintenance such as landscaping and mulching, cutting & pruning trees, shrubs, etc.
- Maintain the operations for RV parking area at the Welcome Center.
- Set up and break down community room for various events, i.e., tables and chairs.
- Manage inventory for purchasing coffee, coffee supplies, and water station supplies.
- Clean restrooms, to include floors, walls, sinks, toilets, trash, fixtures, etc., and replaces bathroom supplies as needed.
- Remove trash and recyclables from building and surrounding outside areas.
- Vacuum and clean floors and carpets as needed.
- Sweep and mop all inside floors, cleaning cobwebs, bugs, etc.
- Sweep front and back sidewalks as needed.
- Wash down rocking chairs and outside windowsills as needed.
- Clean entrance and back windows and glass doors.
- Dusting to include offices, conference room, community room, gift shop, theatre room, display cases, pictures, front counter area, computer areas, and brochure rack area.
- Notifies administrative manager of maintenance and janitorial supply needs.
- Provide customer service at reception desk to include greeting visitors, answering the phone, and giving information.
- Answer questions about local and statewide attractions and events.
- Answer questions about local businesses and able to provide directions.
- Hand out brochures, maps of the area, and other relevant printed information, as requested.
- Operate the POS system for gift shop sales; be able to open and close cash register.
- Assist at events when needed.
- Accomplish all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested by management.
- Participate in employee meetings and training as requested.
- Perform special projects as assigned.
- Work closely with Administrative Manager on set-up and decorating for the Festival of Trees.
- Consistently demonstrate the ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs and reprioritize work as necessary.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school graduation combined with maintenance, custodial, and public service experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repair methods and techniques; general knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools and of the necessary safety precautions; knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently. Thorough knowledge of the location of tourist attractions in the County; thorough knowledge of the layout of the County and the ability to direct people to events and attractions. Ability to greet people and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform heavy manual work; and ability to work independently. Have a proactive approach in identifying what needs to be done. Have computer experience and be capable and comfortable with looking up information on the Internet for guests, as well as handling POS transactions.

Environmental Factors
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Special / Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history background search and drug screening with acceptable results. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
