Required Qualifications:
- Masters’ Degree or higher
- Licensure as a Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
- Minimum of 5 years of teaching and/or school administrative experience
- Successful completion of a criminal record check (C.O.R.I., S.O.R.I., Fingerprints)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a Principal/Assistant Principal.
- Curriculum development experience K-12, with elementary and science of reading experience strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with data systems and instructional technology to inform instructional practices.
- Experience with implementing advanced learning/gifted education strategies.
Reports to: Superintendent of Schools
Supervises: Program administrators and directors as it relates to instruction and personnel; other staff members as the Superintendent may designate.
Job Goal: The Assistant Superintendent will provide substantial and effective assistance to the Superintendent and collaborate with both district and school leaders to provide high quality PK-12 educational programs designed to meet the needs of each and every learner. The Assistant Superintendent will have primary responsibilities for the district's approach to teaching and learning (particularly at Tier 1 of the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), learning outcomes, curriculum and assessment, competency determination, and will support the supervision and evaluation process.
Work Year: 12 months
Performance Responsibilities:
A. Instruction
- Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of the overall program of curriculum, instruction and assessment, and ensures compliance with district goals and state and federal standards.
- Works with the superintendent, principals, program administrators/directors and the PK-12 Instructional Leadership team to maintain continuity and articulation of the instructional program, ensuring high quality core educational experiences—including consideration of innovative learning models—and successful outcomes for each and every student.
- Keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction, and furnishes leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the district educational program, with a particular focus on the effective use of technology, in collaboration with the Director of Media/Technology.
- Works closely with other central office leaders and principals to ensure that the academic and social emotional needs of all students are addressed and that the district’s Curriculum Accommodation Plan is implemented K-12 and reflects the needs for all learners.
- Ensures effective use of data to address the learning needs of both high needs and traditionally underserved students, as well as students who are performing above grade-level.
- Works with general education teachers, special education teachers, related service providers and consulting staff to develop collaborative and inclusive programs that serve all children.
- Works with both the leadership team and the Professional Development Committee to plan, develop and implement local professional development activities, including summer curriculum projects. Manages and approves professional development requests and budget.
- Oversees local, state, and national testing programs, including but not limited to DIBELS, MCAS, NAEP, ACCESS, etc.
- Reviews and evaluates results of assessment data, including district-wide testing programs and other evaluative measures in an effort to identify program strengths and weaknesses.
- Works with the Director of Media/Technology and technology team to develop and maintain a longitudinal database for student achievement data.
- Works with administrators and staff to develop a systemic approach to student progress monitoring and interventions and data collection and inquiry to inform teaching and learning.
- Assists in the coordination of personnel functions, including the determination of staffing needs, selection, assignment, and training of new staff, and the evaluation of staff in collaboration with other administrators. Monitors and supervises the New Teacher
- Interprets existing personnel policies and regulations to staff and makes recommendations concerning the formulation and update of policies and regulations.
- In collaboration with the human resources director, monitors and supervises the evaluation system, including facilitating professional development for evaluators.
D. General
- Assists the Superintendent in directing the administration and coordination of the district’s policies, procedures and programs.
- Assists in the development of the budget, including the development, submission, implementation and monitoring of state, federal, and private grants as assigned that reflect the district’s needs and goals.
- Serves as an educational thought leader by attending and presenting at local, regional and state meetings, conferences and seminars to both keep abreast of developments in curriculum, instruction, and regulations and to determine their appropriateness for inclusion in the district educational program.
- Coordinates and/or participates in presentations each year to explain the district’s educational program to the School Committee, parent groups and members of the community.
- Carries out other duties that the Superintendent may specify.

- Assess the strengths and weaknesses of assigned departments of the Bedford Public School and set goals that will expand its effectiveness.
Must be able to:
- Apply knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, MCAS and Alternative Assessment practices.
- Evaluate programs and make proposals for improvement.
- Lead the district in implementing program improvements.
- Promote collaboration between and among members of the school community.
- Work independently on multiple tasks within district and state timelines.
- Demonstrate clear and concise written and oral communications skills with administration, staff and parents.

- Ability to perform some job responsibilities outside of regular school hours, including attending school-sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
Individual contract to be negotiated based on education and experience.
