JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Transportation is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all aspects of the school district’s transportation services. This includes ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable transportation for students, managing department personnel, maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, and overseeing the maintenance and acquisition of district vehicles.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Good people skills
- Demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks including a proficient understanding of school bus repair.
- Valid CDL license with School Bus endorsement, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
- Knowledge of Arkansas state school bus safety inspection procedures.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop and implement transportation policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Supervise, evaluate, and provide leadership to transportation staff, including bus drivers, mechanics, and support personnel.
- Develop and oversee bus routes and schedules to maximize efficiency while meeting student needs.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal transportation regulations and safety standards.
- Coordinate training and professional development for transportation staff, including safety training and certification requirements.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of the district’s transportation fleet, ensuring vehicles are safe and meet all regulatory requirements.
- Manage the transportation budget, including forecasting costs, monitoring expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.Develop emergency preparedness plans related to student transportation, including inclement weather procedures.
- Serve as the district’s point of contact for transportation-related inquiries from parents, staff, and the community.
- Investigate transportation incidents and accidents, implementing corrective measures as needed.
- Collaborate with school administrators and district personnel to address transportation concerns and support student needs.
- Monitor and evaluate transportation software, GPS systems, and other technology to improve operations.
- Ensure proper record-keeping of transportation operations, including driver certifications, vehicle maintenance, and incident reports.
- Respond to emergency situations during and outside regular work hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns, including emergency breakdowns.
- Substitute as a bus driver when needed for the purpose of ensuring a qualified person is able to run the bus on a route.
- Attend trainings as necessary to current on all procedures, laws and regulations.
- Perform all other duties as determined by the Director for Support Services
QUALIFICATIONs & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience in transportation, logistics, or fleet management, preferably in a school or public sector setting is preferred.

- Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations, including school bus safety standards.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to manage a team effectively.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, parents, and community members.
- Ability to develop and manage budgets effectively.
- Proficiency in transportation software, routing systems, and GPS tracking technology.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements preferred.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and / or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures and provisions of the State of Arkansas applicable to the operation of school busses.

RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and / or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee may be required to use hands including significant finger dexterity to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, such as student equipment and wheelchairs. The employee may occasionally physically assist students with disabilities.
The noise level in the work environment can be low to moderate to loud. The employee may be required to interact with the public, parents and other staff. The employee is responsible for the safety and well-being of students. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
