Description: The Billing Team Lead oversees the daily operations of the billing and compliance functions within our mental health and medical billing team. This role ensures the accuracy of billing practices, adherence to regulatory and payer requirements, and supports the billing team to maintain compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, experience in healthcare billing and compliance, and a proactive approach to resolving billing challenges and optimizing processes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership and Management:
- Lead, mentor, and support the billing team to achieve high performance and compliance standards.
- Assign and prioritize billing tasks, manage team workloads, and ensure productivity goals and deadlines are met.
- Foster a collaborative and positive team culture, providing regular feedback and opportunities for professional growth.
- Billing Oversight
- Oversee the accurate and timely submission of claims for mental health, psychiatric, and medical services.
- Ensure billing practices align with payer guidelines, organizational policies, and compliance regulations.
- Monitor and analyze billing trends to identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains.
- Compliance and Documentation:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of billing regulations, payer requirements, and industry standards, implementing necessary updates and training within the team.
- Conduct regular audits and compliance checks to identify areas of improvement, mitigate risks, and maintain documentation accuracy.
- Collaborate with clinical providers to ensure that documentation supports billing requirements and compliance standards.
- Denial Management and Issue Resolution:
- Review and resolve coding-related denials or rejections from insurance companies, working with the team to take corrective actions as needed.
- Identify patterns in claims denials and develop strategies to reduce recurring issues, maximizing revenue and minimizing lost billing opportunities.
- Reporting and Analysis:
- Generate and review reports on billing accuracy, compliance, productivity, and team performance for management review.
- Utilize data-driven insights to guide the team’s focus, implement targeted improvements, and track progress on key metrics.
- Education and Training:
- Provide ongoing education and training to both the billing team and clinical staff regarding compliance updates, best practices in documentation, and strategies to improve billing accuracy.
- Stay informed about industry trends, bringing back insights to enhance team knowledge and operational standards.
- Other Duties as Assigned:
- Support additional projects and tasks as directed by the Director of Operations and/or BHC Member/Owners to further organizational goals and team objectives.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Billing, or a related field preferred.
- Certification:
- Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or similar credential is preferred but not required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of billing experience in both mental health and medical settings, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare billing guidelines, payer-specific regulations, and compliance standards.
- Skills:
- Leadership and team management skills, with a focus on fostering collaboration and productivity.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in billing and practice management software (experience with systems like Epic, IntakeQ, or similar platforms is preferred).
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to educate and influence clinical and administrative teams.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
