Statement of Purpose
The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) performs routine nursing assistant duties as a part of the treatment team to maintain the well being of patients and integrity of the program.
Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitors patient management and treatment. Maintains a safe environment for patients. May be assigned to provide continual observation of confused patients.
- Check vital signs. Chart routine information e.g. vital signs and daily activities.
- Report and record any changes observed in patient condition or behavior, including unusual incidents. Identify, report and assist with the management of emergencies.
- Interact with patients to support their participation in the program. May provide educational sessions or other groups for patients.
- Assist with orientation, admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
- Provides clerical support as directed by nursing staff. Keep charts in order with all forms properly identified.
- Take and record accurate vital signs.
- Follow directions of nursing personnel and physicians.
- Successfully completes the medication test.
- Observe universal precautions, including correct handling of blood borne pathogens, storage of lab specimens, and disposal of infectious wastes.
- Remain calm while performing job duties.
- Assess and reports patient behavioral changes.
- Identify a crisis. Demonstrate appropriate techniques for interventions, including AMA, behavioral issues, suicide threat, code green, and contraband on the unit.
- Recognize the symptoms associated with chemical dependency and detoxification.
- Document patient treatment progress.
- Make presentations and facilitate educational groups as needed.
- Works as a member of the treatment team.
- Maintain professional boundaries and standards.
- Treats patients with respect, care and concern.
- Recognize personal biases working within diverse populations. Maintain cultural sensitivity at all times.
- Comply with confidentiality requirements at all times.
- Represents BHS well in all contacts.
- Maintain familiarity with BHS policies and procedures and other applicable regulations; performs job duties accordingly.
- Carries out appropriate interventions, including responding to emergencies and performing CPR and/or first aid.
- May order inventory, and/or stock supplies in the unit.
- May be required to assist patients with self-administration of PRN and other medications as ordered by physician.
- Courteously answer phones, appropriately directing calls and taking messages. Makes phone calls for patients as approved by the nurse in charge.
- Handle patients’ personal belongings as directed.
- Run errands within the CDRH and respond to requests for assistance from the nurse in charge, the DON, and other authorized staff.
- Attend meetings and participates in committees as assigned.

Qualifications
Prerequisite Qualifications
Following are the qualifications required to perform the essential functions of this position. Qualifications may be subject to modification based on the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Bilingual abilities may be required within certain BHS programs.
High school diploma or equivalency. Certified Nursing Assistant required. Must have valid California driver’s license and liability insurance if driving personal vehicle on BHS business.
Vision, hearing, manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination must be adequate for performance of job duties. Able to sit at desk, use keyboard, write and physically perform other job duties. Able to move about the facility to observe clients and staff.
