The Associate Director, Accounting is responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. This position is responsible for maintaining the computerized financial reporting system to ensure that financial data is accurate. Under the general direction of the Controller, plans, reviews and coordinates the work of the financial accounting division. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation, appropriate accounting control procedures and the support of budget and forecast activities. This position reports to the Controller and is a full time position working in a hybrid work environment in Baltimore, MD. BHSB will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
Essential Functions
- Plans, directs and supervises the work of financial reporting and general ledger accounting, oversees the posting and maintenance of general and subsidiary accounts, accounts payable and receivable processing.
- Compile and analyze financial information to prepare financial statements.
- Responsible for posting accounting transactions, journal entries, accruals and deferrals in a timely fashion.
- Coordinate monthly financial closing.
- Assists in the development of the administrative line-item budget.
- Prepare monthly financial reports with accompanying schedules and worksheets.
- Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures.
- Track and maintain company insurance policies.
- Maintain licenses and registrations.
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly and year end close processes.
- Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities.
- Prepare for financial audit and assist in the coordination of the audit process.
- Assist in compiling financial data for corporate tax reporting to comply with federal and state government requirements.
- Prepares periodic internal financial and statistical statements and reports.

Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- Four to six years progressively responsible experience in the accounting field, preferably in the non-profit sector.
- A minimum of three years supervisory experience is required.
- Knowledge and a thorough understanding of financial reporting and general ledger structure
- Knowledge of principles and practices of professional accounting and routine auditing procedures
- Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to public fund accounting
- Ability to maintain general ledger accounts, compile, prepare and write financial reports
- Ability to perform complex financial analysis
- Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.
- An ability to work independently or as a team member with ability to multi-task is necessary.
- Fund accounting software knowledge is required. Knowledge of Abila/Sage Accounting Software is a plus.
- Ability to interact in a hybrid/virtual environment
- Proficient using Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
Supervisory Requirements: This position supervises two positions.
This role may require travel to other locations for meetings and other business-related needs. Ability to travel locally 10% of the time is required. It is important to have access to some form of transportation to travel to off-site meetings, conferences, and site visits.

This means that starting salaries are based on the requirements of each job and are non-negotiable, that the organization is not favoring people who are comfortable asking for a salary rate increase. The starting hourly/ annualized salary rate for this position is $93,517.

BHSB offers employer paid life insurance, short-term and long-term disability as well as a 403(b) plan with employer contribution, generous PTO and 13 days paid holiday.
