Laborer Skills Required
Laborers must exhibit a specific set of qualifications and skills in the performance of their daily duties. While the job is largely physical, there is also a range of mental skills and knowledge a good laborer must possess. A few of these important qualities and skills can include:
- Laborers must be able to be trainable and retain information and instructions.
- Laborers must be able to take orders and complete those orders per their supervisor.
- Laborers also must maintain and operate heavy equipment and machinery, from forklifts to jackhammers and more. We will train, if necessary, on farm equipment, excavators, etc.
- To perform their very physical job, laborers have to conduct strenuous and physically demanding tasks for long hours and in extreme environmental conditions.
- Strength: The lifting duties involved in the job of a laborer often require lifting and carrying weights in excess of 50 pounds.
- Laborers must be able to work weekends when needed.
Preferred Skillset:
- Experience on a farm include operating farm machinery and equipment such as combines, grain carts, tractors, planters, discs, etc.
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of farm machinery and equipment.
- A CDL Class A with experience driving a grain trailer
- Experience operating heavy haul equipment such as trackhoe, excavator, wheel loaders, crushing machine with conveyors, etc.
- The ability to hold grade along with organization skills in sorting, stockpiling, etc. of various aggregates so area is clean and manageable.
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
- A Class B license with an updated medical card and experience in dump truck hauling of various aggregates including hot asphalt.
- Knowledge of the proper paperwork required when driving a commercial dump
truck.
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of tractor-trailers, 6 axel dump trucks along with ability to repair or change tires with a tire changer.
Laborer education and training requirements
A GED or high school diploma is needed to provide the basic math skills required for the job. You must be trainable and can retain that information.
Laborer experience requirements
As with any job, possessing experience can show a legacy of reliability and the ability to apply the necessary skills to perform the tasks required. This is especially true if your job history shows long-term employment, which demonstrates loyalty. We will provide on-the job training if you have a basic set of skills. If you have experience, we will feel confident that we won't have to spend as much time training you to perform the necessary duties at hand. If after 30 days of probation, you show the basic skills, are trainable and follow instructions, we will choose to make you a permanent addition to our team. We do not tolerate insubordination (including refusing to do a job you were hired or trained to do), tardiness or disrespect of your supervisor.
