Position : English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher FY2425_41

Reports to : Building Principal / Director of Curriculum

Location : High School

Start Date : August 16,2024

Status : .5 FTE

Purpose :

The ESL Teacher provides specialized instruction for the purposes of developing the students' ability to effectively perform courses of study in English and acquire the English language.

Essential Job Duties

  • Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and Montana English Language Proficiency Standards. Instruction must be consistent and coordinated with the district's instructional program so that students meet or exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in the state and federal law.
  • Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to meaningfully access the district's instructional program.
  • Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student's progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition. Maintains complete and accurate records of student's progress and evidence of growth and progress.
  • Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
  • Facilitates frequent and effective home-school communication by coordinating : conferences; written communication; parent trainings and other meetings / events; and administrative support for childcare, interpreting, translations, etc.
  • Attends professional English Language Acquisition meetings as well as serves on building or district committees, and attends staff meetings as may be requested or as established by school policy.
  • Understands and complies with the policies, rules, and regulations regarding the English learners. Advocates for the program needs that are required to meet the learning needs of English
  • Maintains electronic student records.
  • Recruits and provides training for district ESL volunteers and community mentors.
  • Performs such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, Curriculum Director, or principal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of high school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Skill in classroom instruction.
  • Skill in operating equipment used in a classroom setting, including a computer; planning and managing projects.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to be flexible to work with a diversity of individuals and / or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment.
  • Ability to problem solve to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Ability to manage time, adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines and schedules.
  • Ability to set priorities, work as part of a team and work with and manage frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to adjust daily work plans and work hours to be highly responsive to school needs
  • Required Qualifications

  • Valid State of Montana Teaching Certificate
  • Endorsement or approval in English as a Second Language
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to English language acquisition.
  • Equipment

    Uses standard classroom equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

    Travel Requirements

    Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • The environment can be stressful due to the nature of the work.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand and reach with hands or arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to be able to hear conversations in loud and quiet environments.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 10-30 pounds routinely with or without an accommodation.
  • The employee frequently works within time constraints and must maintain attentiveness intensity.
  • Frequently involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.
  • Exercises flexibility and the ability to shift from one task to another.
  • Occasional travel / mobility between schools, or between schools and the Administration office, may be required.
  • Effective hearing and speech abilities.
  • Subject to stress caused by a changing environment, diversity in the organization, tight deadlines and work load, but must be able to maintain work / life balance amidst intense work demands.
  • Demonstrates regular attendance performing duties as described.
  • Reports to work fit for duty with characteristics inherent to the position.
