General Description
The purpose of this position is to assist technicians and perform basic shop support.
This position works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Performs preventive maintenance necessary to ensure the proper functioning of vehicles and/or heavy equipment, mechanical systems, and component parts.
- Performs vehicle and medium-heavy truck diagnostics using scan tools and laptop computer.
- Performs major and minor repairs on all air conditioning systems including automotive, medium-heavy, and heavy trucks.
- Performs major and minor mechanical work, including but not limited to, repair and replace water/fuel pumps, radiators, alternators, differentials, timing chains, belts, hoses, fuses, valves, and batteries.
- Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools
- Operates a variety of machinery such as computerized tire balancing machine, tire mount/dismount machine and front-end alignment machine.
- Cleans and maintains shop facilities and equipment.
- Responds to service calls for assistance; retrieves or repairs vehicles and equipment in the field, as needed.
- Assists in locating mechanical parts
- Transports vehicles and equipment to various locations.
- Provides guidance and training to lower-level Service Technicians
- Collaborates with vendors, technical staff, and manufacturing representatives.
- Performs vehicle inspections for the State of Texas
- Attends all trainings and meetings as required
- Performs special duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Five (5) years of vehicle and equipment maintenance experience
- Prior experience with scan tools, shop gauges, and welding
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
- Basic computer skills such as email, word processing programs, and data entry
- Ability to provide own hand tools
Physical Demands:
- Position involves frequent sitting, standing, and walking
- Position involves climbing ladders, carrying toolboxes, and operating hand and power tools
- Position involves bending, kneeling, crawling, and maneuvering in and around all kinds of equipment
- Position involves lifting a minimum of 75 pounds to waist height
- Position involves seeing and hearing as well as perceiving colors
- Position involves writing and reading to a size 10 font
- Position involves safely operating a motor vehicle
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
- Indoor and outdoor work in all environments, including inclement weather
- Travel between work sites, as required
- Exposure to dust, chemicals, fumes, bacteria, fungus, and high noise levels
Licenses and Special Certifications:
- Valid Class C Driver's license
- Requires state Inspector license
- Requires Class C operator license for underground storage tank facility
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class A CDL
- State Vehicle Inspectors License
- Five (5) Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) certifications or five (5) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

Irregular Hours:
- Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm) may be required
- May be deemed essential personnel in the event of an emergency
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
- Requires state Inspector license.
- Requires Class C operator license for underground storage tank facility.
