Job Description:
General Description
The purpose of this position is to advocate and provide mental health/treatment planning/case management needs for defendants of the Bell County Veterans Treatment and Drug Courts by working with various community partners.
Works closely with members of treatment court teams to coordinate a structured system of court-based behavioral interventions. Collaborates with the Veterans Health Administration, Local Mental Health Authority, the Community Supervision and Corrections Department, law enforcement, and other criminal justice partners and community resources. Responsible for collecting, maintaining, and reporting data used for program evaluation and grant purposes.
This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Meets clients at the Bell County jail. Collaborates and communicates with jail mental health staff and various Deputies when issues arise. Develops treatment planning. Interviews clients incarcerated, subsequently providing intervention strategies, “discharge” plans, and treatment recommendations.
- Coordinates with Pretrial Services for placement in the community and referral to resources for continuity of care.
- Collaborates with Specialty Court Team at bi-weekly meetings to assist and advocate for participants within the Specialty Court Program
- Performs crisis intervention as needed, for defendants appearing in District Courts.
- Coordinates with the County and District Coordinators
- Collaborates with defense attorneys, clients, Specialty Court/Treatment Court Judge, District Attorney’s Office, and service providers to approve client’s participation within docket.
- Extensively collaborates with community resource partners in reference to housing benefits, treatment, etc. to ensure clients have safe and healthy environments to promote success of treatment plans.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a Master’s degree in Social Work and hold licensure as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). License must remain active and in good standing throughout the duration of employment.
Physical Demands:
- Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations. Lifting of light materials and/or equipment.
- Must manage stress associated with interactions with persons who are argumentative, emotional, or intellectually disabled and/or persons in crisis, and must have the ability to remain calm and professional.
- Working in the proximity of some people who could be considered dangerous.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history and maintain liability insurance coverage of at least state minimum standards.
