What are the responsibilities and job description for the After School Counselor position at Bell Family YMCA?
Position Summary:
The person selected for this position will be under the direct supervision of the Youth program Director and will be responsible for providing an appropriately safe, caring, and enriching environment for the children enrolled in the YMCA after- school program.
Counselors are responsible for conducting themselves in an appropriate manner, setting an example for children , parents, and co-workers by reflecting the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
Counselors are responsible for complying with all standards set by Ga Decal and Quality rated and will adhere to all YMCA childcare policies and procedures.
General job functions:
Counselors must attend all staff meetings and complete all required training.
Understand the needs of children ages 5-12 and be able to plan activities based upon those needs.
Keep a consistent head count of all children present at site; communicate changes with all other staff.
Assist in maintaining clean-up schedules; including janitorial duties necessary to maintain the cleanliness of the classrooms.
Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, absences on each child.
Maintain supplies, equipment and materials; inform the Program Director when new/additional supplies are needed.
Comply with all emergency procedures appropriate to the site in conformity with procedures adopted by emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of the children and the staff.
Work Experience:
Experience working with children of varied ages highly desired.
Knowledge/Experience:
Must have the ability to demonstrate and/or show competency in the following areas:
- Supervising youth and presenting positive role modeling through all interactions with program participants.
- To meet program goals as outlined in the Childcare Policies and Procedures Manual.
- To keep confidences, loyalties, and practice professionalism.
- Be reliable and dependable
- Work a flexible schedule to meet program staffing/planning needs
- Exercise mature judgement and sound decision making.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Learn, follow and enforce local Y and national guidelines related to internal policies.
- Complete 18 hours of childcare training each year.
- Must 18 years and or older
- CPR and first aid certified (can obtain after hired)

High School Diploma or higher

2:00pm -6:00pm Mon-Fri (during school)
