Position Summary: The Lifeguard of Bellerive Country Club (“Bellerive”) is responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment by enforcing all water safety policies and procedures. This role involves actively monitoring Members and guests in and around the pool, preventing accidents, and responding swiftly to emergencies. Additionally, the Lifeguard fosters positive Member relations by providing excellent service and promoting a safe, welcoming atmosphere for all.
Core Four Competencies:
- Maintain constant supervision of swimmers, proactively prevent accidents, respond swiftly to emergencies, and administer basic first aid when needed.
- Foster a welcoming and enjoyable environment by assisting Members and guests, enforcing pool rules respectfully, and addressing concerns professionally.
- Ensure pool cleanliness, inspect and maintain changing rooms and restrooms, conduct safety checks, and properly store safety and swimming equipment.
- Collaborate with the Pool / Swim Team to organize swim programs, attend training sessions, maintain accurate records, and communicate safety concerns to management.
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintain constant supervision over swimmers, proactively preventing accidents and responding swiftly to emergencies.
- Foster a welcoming and enjoyable environment by assisting Members and guests with inquiries, enforcing rules respectfully, and ensuring a positive poolside experience.
- Vacuum the pool bottom skim debris from the surface, and empty skimmers to ensure a pristine swimming environment.
- Provide prompt care for minor injuries such as cuts, bruises, and abrasions, ensuring the well-being of all swimmers.
- Regularly inspect and maintain changing rooms, restrooms, and showers to ensure cleanliness and Member satisfaction.
- Assist in organizing clinics and private lessons under the guidance of the Pool Manager and Swim Coach.
- Ensure all Members and guests adhere to safety regulations, addressing concerns professionally and escalating issues as necessary.
- Check and report needed first aid supplies, ensure rescue tubes and flotation devices are in place, and properly store swimming aids and pool toys after use.
- Tidy and organize pool and cabana areas, ensuring a well-maintained space for the following day.
- Maintain accurate logs and reports as required, and promptly notify the Pool Manager and Swim Coach of any safety concerns or Member issues.
- Participate in all required training sessions and staff meetings to stay updated on safety protocols and operational procedures.
- Conduct safety checks and ensure all required preparations are completed before opening the pool to Members.
- Completes other duties as assigned by the Pool Manager and Swim Coach, or other members of Bellerive’s leadership team.
Requirements
- Must have the ability to be comfortable working in an environment with chlorine and other pool-cleaning chemicals, including frequent exposure to their odors.
- Must possess strong observational skills to quickly identify potential hazards or distressed swimmers and take immediate action.
- Must have the ability to balance multiple projects and have strong project and time management skills. Must possess high attention to detail.
- Must display an aptitude for working in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated ability to work autonomously, take direction, and exercise good judgment. Must have the ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered.
- Must have a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills in order to communicate and work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence. Must use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate fluent English; compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone.
- Ability to simultaneously process routine daily functions, resolve sensitive issues, and complete complex assignments utilizing above-average critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work overtime as necessary, as well as nights, weekends, and holidays when needed to ensure the appropriate demands of the department.
- The physical demands of this position are representative of those that might be met by an employee for them to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the workday and having the ability to transport fifty (50) pounds.
Qualifications / Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred; or current high school student actively pursuing a diploma.
- American Red Cross Basic First Aid certification, and current CPR certification (including AED training) required.
- Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent preferred.
- Strong swimming ability is essential, including the capability to swim multiple laps and perform deep-water dives to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool.
- Must possess the endurance, strength, and agility required for water rescues and extended periods of active supervision.
