POSITION OBJECTIVE:

This position is responsible for Japanese language instruction in all elementary subjects in a 50/50 dual language immersion program.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

 

• Plan and prepare high-quality lessons that reflect knowledge of students and respect for their identities, build on students’ prior knowledge to set rigorous content and language objectives, and assess student outcomes to refine future instruction.
• Foster a classroom culture of learning characterized by respect and belonging, high expectations for all students, clear and consistent classroom procedures, and a safe physical space for student learning.
• Engage students in language rich learning experiences that foster social emotional learning while developing content knowledge, and academic Japanese language skills.
• Demonstrate effective teaching practices through intentional questioning and discussion techniques and reflection.
• Effectively utilize curriculum resources and educational technology to support individual, small group, and whole-class instruction.
• Use formative and summative assessments to set annual student growth goals and inform or modify instruction. Maintain accurate student records.
• Communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community through effective and ongoing communication in both Japanese and English.
• Collaborate closely with English partner teacher, Japanese dual language immersion team, and ML/LAP facilitators. Participate in professional learning opportunities at the building and district levels.
• Participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal, to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional development.
• Demonstrate professionalism and reflective teaching practices.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

• Reports directly to and is supervised by the Building Administrator

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: (positions in this class typically require)

 

Required:
• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in elementary education.
• Instructional/ Professional fluency in Japanese.

 

Preferred:
• Prior teaching experience in a dual language setting.
• Bilingual Education and/or English Language Learners endorsement.
• Graduate degree in language, multilingual education, and/or educational leadership

 

Allowable Substitutions:
• Experience may be substituted depending upon other qualifications.

 

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

 

• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate.
• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a WL Japanese endorsement

 

KNOWLEDGE: (position requirements at entry)

 

• Fundamentals of Japanese language and literacy development and instructional practices.
• Instructional practices for dual language immersion, including bridging and supporting students with disabilities in the dual language setting.
• Culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, Universal Design for Learning and effective instructional strategies for multilingual learners.
• Ability to use varied formative and summative assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios, and student goals and self-assessment.
• Eagerness to learn new technology.

• Possesses the ability to work collaboratively with parents, the community, school, and district staff to support the needs of students.
• Possesses the ability to design and deliver instruction that meets the needs of a diverse group of students.
• Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills in English and Japanese as required to work with a community rich in diversity.
• Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations across cultures, languages, and experiences.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a general posting for one or more Teaching positions. Positions may be full or part-time and will be filled as specific openings are identified.

 

$ 72,270 to $ 135,542 annual salary (based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement salary schedule). Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.


Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon .45 FTE. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
