Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Chief Business Officer, the Director of Fiscal Services plans, organizes, and directs all major fiscal functions of the District, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, purchasing, and financial reporting. This leadership role provides strategic guidance, supervision, and support to a team of managers and fiscal staff, ensuring district-wide financial health and compliance with state and federal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage district financial operations including payroll, budgeting, purchasing, and accounting functions
- Supervise and support fiscal managers and staff, promoting a culture of excellence and collaboration
- Lead financial planning and reporting, including budget forecasting and multiyear projections
- Monitor revenues and expenditures to ensure responsible financial stewardship
- Prepare and present financial statements and reports to district leadership and governing bodies
- Ensure compliance with California education finance laws and governmental accounting standards
- Serve as liaison to auditors and oversee audit preparation and review processes
- Provide fiscal insight for collective bargaining and grant administration
- Contribute to district-wide financial policy development and strategic planning
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field
(Master’s degree is preferred)
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public agency financial management
- At least 2 years of supervisory experience
- Preferred: Experience in a K–12 California school district setting
Key Skills & Knowledge
- Governmental and school district accounting principles (including LCFF, ADA, apportionment)
- Financial reporting, audit compliance, and internal control practices
- Strategic budget development and multi-year financial forecasting
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Proficiency in financial software systems and data analysis tools
- Understanding of grant funding, compliance, and collective bargaining financials
- Commitment to ethical fiscal management and equitable resource allocation
Working Conditions & Additional Info
- Primary work location: District office environment
- Occasional evening meetings and site visits required
- Requires extended periods of computer use and communication with internal and external stakeholders
