What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician position at Bellingrath Gardens and Home?
One of several staff involved in the upkeep of the physical plant of Bellingrath Gardens & Home. This position is responsible for tasks such as repairing and maintaining all equipment, performing maintenance on electrical and plumbing infrastructure and water features (including pumping systems and fountains), generator maintenance, and repairs or reconstruction of fences, outbuildings, greenhouses, and exterior and interior finishes of main buildings, including painting. The Maintenance Technician also assists with installation and fabrication of Magic Christmas in Lights and other exhibitions and programs.
Primary Responsibilites:
- Diagnose and repair small equipment
- Perform cosmetic work on various structures (painting, sealing, mortar work)
- Assemble, construct and/or upgrade small structures
- Disassembly and proper disposal of unneeded materials and waste
- Assess and correct drainage or drainage system problems, including clean-out of clogged guttering and underground pipes or drain tile
- Repair appliances
- Perform minor electrical work
- Perform minor repairs on natural gas heaters
- Operate tractor, bucket lifts, backhoe and front-end loaders, and other general equipment
- Assist with installation and setup of set pieces for special events, including aerial work via bucket lifts and fabrication of set pieces
- Troubleshoot and solve problems, especially in emergency situations
- All other tasks and duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- 3 years of work experience or apprenticeship in maintenance trades preferred
- Certificate from a 2-year career tech school, or similar training in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding or a related subject preferred
- Proficient in electrical, plumbing, and woodworking trades
- Highly proficient in welding; craftsman-level skill in carpentry
- Familiarity with basic construction equipment, welding machinery, plumbing and electrical general tools, and power tools
- Ability to translate drawings (or plans of items) to be built into real-life structures preferred
- Ability to read a plan or drawing and construct items to specification
- Experience with greenhouse systems
- Ability to complete multiple tasks in different trades within a day’s work
- Strong work ethic and an attitude of safety
- Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds
- Strong interpersonal communications skills
- Ability to work effectively and cohesively with other employees
- Ability to work outdoors daily in climatic conditions typical to Mobile, Alabama
Valid driver’s license
