Belmont Charter High School was founded in 2017 and we offer a positive, inclusive and supportive environment. Here, we understand success means something different to every student and we give them the opportunity to design their own path. We are currently seeking a teacher to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a secondary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential, in accordance with the mission and standards of Belmont Charter Network. STRIPES is an integrated, credit-bearing program that works closely with the Parkside neighborhood to design and implement real-world experiences and projects with high-school students. We are seeking an innovative classroom teacher to join our team at Belmont Charter High School. The integrated model is rooted in a student-driven, thematic approach to learning. It blends subject matter, as well as many life skills, into the curriculum, while balancing an individualized approach to learning with teamwork. STRIPES exposes students to education beyond the classroom in the greater Philadelphia community. Central to the teaching and learning is a commitment to high-quality work with individual learning goals for each student. We are seeking an individual who, above all, has an unconditional positive regard for students. Additionally, a STRIPES partner teacher is dedicated, resourceful, adaptive, open to working in a collaborative environment, and interested in the experiential learning process. This person should have an interest in developing their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to urban education.
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following:
The teacher would be expected to
foster positive relationships with students.
collaborate with the partner STRIPES teacher to develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with innovative instructional philosophy and congruent with course objectives.
build engaging instructional strategies to push students towards higher-level thinking skills.
translate traditional lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students.
use the campus and city as a classroom by planning outdoor activities, as well as establishing partnerships with local organizations.
establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and community by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors.
evaluate academic and social growth of students, give formative feedback, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records, including attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities, as necessary.
communicate regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.
model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
Requirements:
- Experience in urban education and/or outdoor, experiential learning;
- Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check Clearance (Act 34);
- Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151);
- Federal Bureau of Investigation Record Check Clearance (Act 114);
- Sexual Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Clearance (Act 168).
Preferred:
- B.A./B.S. degree from accredited institution;
- Experience teaching/working with high school students
- Valid and active Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate.
