Director of Athletics
Belmont Day School seeks a professional, collaborative, and innovative Athletic Director to lead the daily operations of the athletics program and physical education department.
The person in this role will serve as an integral member of the community and the leader of middle school athletics and the lower school physical education department. The ideal candidate will center students in mission-driven learning and demonstrate a deep commitment to seeing every child as a student-athlete. A qualified candidate will model integrity, teamwork, professionalism, collaboration, responsibility, and respect for all persons and demonstrate a commitment to advancing the school’s mission and core values. This role requires the candidate to possess a strong enthusiasm for and knowledge of pre-kindergarten through eighth grade development.
This is a full-time, eleven-month, exempt, and benefit-eligible position that reports to the assistant head of school . The athletic director will supervise the physical education department, all coaching staff, and the associate director of athletics. The typical schedule is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Friday, during the school year, with flexibility required. This role includes planning and running two weeks of sports camps at the start and end of the camp season. Hours during these weeks will align with camp offerings and differ from the school year hours. This role begins on August 18, 2025. This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored relocation.

Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a commitment to seeing every child as a student-athlete.
- Communicate and enforce the school’s institutional norms and expectations with students, parents, coaches, and faculty..
- Collaborate with members of the faculty and administration to support the educational, social, and emotional development of students.
- Develop, organize, supervise, and evaluate all phases of the athletics program consistent with the school’s mission, values, and departmental goals.
- Provide programmatic and instructional oversight for the lower school physical education program for pre-kindergarten to grade five.
- Provide administrative oversight for all aspects of the athletic program, including, but not limited to, coordinating schedules for practices and games, transportation, officials, communication updates to coaches, players, families, school nurses, and faculty as needed.
- Ensure that facilities and equipment are safe and prepared for use, in collaboration with other school administrators.
- Recruit, onboard, train, and supervise all seasonal coaching staff, including annual evaluations.
- Serve as assistant coach or coach during the school year, as needed.
- Review and revise annually the relevant sections of the school’s Family Partnership Guide in collaboration with department members and the assistant head of school.
- Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice, performance, and the overall athletics program annually.
- Run two one-week sports camps—one in June and one in August, to align with pre- and post-camp weeks of summer programs (dates vary annually depending on the calendar), in collaboration with the director of summer programs.
- Excellent problem-solving and demonstrated project management skills with a commitment to being solution-driven
- Ability to initiate and complete multiple tasks independently or collaboratively as required
- Strong oral and written communication
- Ability to motivate, inspire, and serve as a role model to students, coaches, and colleagues
- Robust interpersonal and management skills
- Meticulous attention to detail and outstanding organization
- Proficiency with technology
- A bachelor's degree in physical education, sports management, or a related area is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
- Over five years of experience coaching and teaching
- Over five years in athletic administration leadership, with supervisory and management responsibilities.
- Excellent knowledge of compliance, safety, and regulations
- Strong negotiation and public relations experience
- Budgetary oversight
- Deep commitment to building inclusive communities and the ability to infuse diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice concepts into programs
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
