Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Dean and Director of RLH serves as the senior housing officer and sets the vision and direction for the department in accordance with the institutions mission, vision, and strategic goals. The Assistant Dean and Director serves as an integral member of the Student Formation leadership team. The Assistant Dean and Director takes primary responsibility for coordinating all aspects of the Residence Life & Housing program. 

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for residence life and housing to create a high-quality living and learning environment. The Assistant Dean and Director ensures that residential facilities are safe and provide a living and learning environment that enhances student success and meets occupancy goals. Projects and manages all aspects of the annual housing budget in conjunction with the Division for Student Formation. Responsible for the selection, development, training, evaluation, supervision of professional and paraprofessional staff. 
  • Responsible for the coordination of all processes related to occupancy management and forecasting. Coordinates building assessments, planning processes, and cleaning and maintenance of residential facilities. Evaluates and assesses occupancy, retention, and projection trends. Prepares or coordinates reports and analyzes data to inform strategic decision-making. Reports may include but are not limited to occupancy; facility planning; living learning communities; mid-year and annual reports and others as requested.
  • Ensures that the Universities strategic focus are incorporated into all RLH practices, programs, and trainings. Ensures that RLH programs challenge and support the academic, social, and personal development of resident students. Works in partnership with academic affairs to develop and enhance residential living learning communities. Perform regular on call duties, including responding to emergency situations by coordinating and assisting personnel. Address safety and security concerns.
  • Serve as a liaison to other University offices. Establish or strengthen excellent relationships with key stakeholders, which at times includes problem solving and service response to inquiries and concerns from Residence Life constituents including but not limited to residential students, parents and families, as well as prospective students. Creates relationships, interacts and negotiates with off-campus vendors and contractors in accordance with university policies and applicable state laws.
  • Collaborates with other campus departments in the delivery of summer conferences, campus-wide celebrations, and other events and activities. Collaborates with facilities management, to identify and coordinate necessary facilities improvements, capital repairs and furnishing purchases. Collaborates with dining services and serves as the principal decision-maker on all exemptions from housing and meal plan requirements including housing accommodation requests for students registered through the OAS.
  • Oversees the planning and implementation of all RLH marketing and information materials. Ensures the RLH web presence is consistently maintained, regularly updated, and aligned with university and divisional goals. Responsible for the creating, implementing and disseminating a housing master calendar that aligns with the University calendar.
  • Serve in the Administrator-on call rotation as assigned; Represent the Division for meetings and/or committees as assigned; Assist with projects and initiatives as assigned; Attend all staff meetings and professional development sessions as required; Support and attend University events and programs.

Required Qualifications:


  • Knowledge of student conduct, student conduct management systems, and housing database management systems.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and other federal laws pertaining to student services.
  • Understanding of unique mission and challenges of private Christian higher education.
  • Knowledge of marketing and recruiting.
  • Superior people skills.
  • Ability to create and manage the budget process.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems. 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workflow to meet deadlines.
  • Desire to function in an environment that emphasizes innovation, continuous improvement, and teamwork. 
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts. 
  • Ability to foster collaboration and initiative among staff.
  • Must have a working knowledge of human development theory.   
  • Must know current trends and standards in housing and residence life on a college campus.


Required Education: Masters required Doctoral degree preferred

Required Experience: Experience in residence life and housing or increasingly advanced supervisory roles in Higher Education. 4-6 years required; 7-9 preferred
