Job Title: Copywriter
Job Description: Writing, Editing, Proofreading, and Content Development
Job Summary: The copywriter is responsible for writing, editing, proofreading, and content development and is an integral position in Communications and Marketing. The copywriter will write both long and short form content to be used in marketing materials, on the website, and in the magazine. Additionally, the copywriter will assist the president's office with messaging and editing when needed to a variety of constituents.
Essential Duties:
- Write web and magazine stories that highlight the people, programs, and places.
- Write and edit short-form content that feeds content for our weekly Beloiters Beat among other uses.
- Review and edit copy for internal and external stakeholders to ensure clarity, accuracy, and adherence to college editorial standards.
- Proofread news stories, press releases, social posts, new and existing web pages, and other copy for grammar, style, and consistency. Ensure that all content is in the college's brand voice, style, and tone.
- Supervise student writers who assist with stories and content.
- Work in collaboration with the Chief of Staff to the President to write ad-hoc content.
- Work in collaboration with all Communications and Marketing staff on department-wide work.
- Provide analytics and recommendations to increase engagement with content where appropriate.
- Collaborate on key college projects and initiatives as assigned.
College Calendar
- Collaborate on the public-facing College Calendar, including working with campus partners to draft, edit, and publish events. Utilize the calendar events as a source for story ideas.
- Collaborate with campus partners to ensure information is accurate and updated as needed.
- Partner with the Social Media Manager on promoting events.
Email and Project Management
- Monitor the Marketing and Communications and newsletter email accounts.
- Respond to and manage requests for the college and forward to colleagues as appropriate.
General
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with colleagues across campus, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.
- Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
- Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or a related field.
- Experience in higher education is preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, editing, and problem-solving skills.
- Able to work independently with attention to detail.
- Able to work well under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Able to work with students in stressful and sensitive situations.
Special Requirements
- Some travel to conferences and workshops representing Beloit College.
- May require attending events evenings and occasional Saturdays during certain times of the year.
Certifications, Licenses, Restrictions
- Must possess a valid driver's license to attend off campus events for coverage.
- Must pass background clearances.
