Job Description
The Clerk of Scales weighs riders and riding equipment before and after each race; ensures assigned handicapped weights for each race; notifies racing officials of rider unable to meet weight limits; communicates with many officials, team members and judges; provides support to the higher level management; and performs related tasks within the area of assignment.
Assumes responsibility for the weighing of riders and riding equipment to ensure handicaps are appropriate on racing programs and maintains communications through-out the racing
Maintains accurate scale sheets for each race, records of scratches and rider changes; communicates scratches and riding changes to appropriate assigned team members;
Weighs out jockeys prior to each race; may direct rider to insert or remove lead pad from saddle pocket to meet specified weight; ensures identities and correct distribution of saddlecloths; weighs in jockey and equipment following each race and ensures lead pads were not lost during race.
Continuously communicates with various officials, team members and judges regarding track ratings, scratches, race times, delays, betting deductions, racing equipment status, correct weight and official placing.
Monitor, maintain and ensure scales are working properly; schedule preventative or corrective maintenance quickly as needed.
Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and innovations in the field of horse racing.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Related education and experience may be interchangeable on a year for year basis)
High School Diploma or GED, plus three (3) years experience as a Clerk of Scales.
Ability to maintain all Regulatory licenses within assigned state of employment.
Must successfully pass background check
Must successfully pass an alcohol and drug screening
Must be 21 years of age at time of hire.
Knowledge of :
Operations, services and activities of racing and weighing operations; principles and procedures of Racing Commission regulations; various of riding equipment; principles and procedures of proper record keeping; principles of writing and basic form preparation; office procedures; methods and equipment including computers and applicable software applications; pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability to :
Ensure scales are up to code regulations; operate scales correctly and accurately; interpret and explain policies and procedures; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; prepare clear and concise reports; interpret and explain policies and procedures; interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations.
