    Job Description

    Position: High School Bilingual Counselor

    Reports to: Building Principal


    Qualifications:

    • Professional Educator License with School Counseling Endorsement
    • Fluency in both English and Spanish
    • Experience working with bilingual or multicultural student populations
    • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
    • Knowledge of academic and behavioral interventions

    Terms of Employment: Nine (9) Months

    Basic Function: The Bilingual School Counselor supports students by providing guidance in academic, personal, social, and emotional development. They establish goals for the counseling program appropriate to the setting and the students served in accordance with Illinois State and National Standards. They help create a safe and nurturing environment where students of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds can succeed. The counselor will work with students, teachers, and parents to foster a positive school climate, and they must be able to communicate effectively in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing.

    Key Performance Responsibilities:


    • Academic Guidance:

      • Assist students in developing academic plans that align with their goals and abilities.
      • Help students choose courses and plan for post-secondary education or career paths.
      • Monitor students’ academic performance and collaborate with teachers and parents to provide support.
      • Conduct individual counseling to promote study habits, time management, and goal setting.
      • Knowledge of alternative application processes unique to international/newcomer students including FAFSA.
      • Assist with researching scholarship opportunities for international/newcomer students.
    • Social and Emotional Counseling:

      • Provide individual counseling on personal and social issues affecting students, such as family conflicts, peer relationships, stress, and self-esteem.
      • Address crisis situations, including bullying, substance abuse, and mental health concerns.
      • Implement prevention and intervention programs that address student well-being.
    • Support for English Language Learners (ELLs):

      • Advocate for the unique needs of ELL students in academic and emotional settings.
      • Offer culturally relevant and language-appropriate services to help students adjust and thrive.
      • Assist ELL students and their families in understanding educational requirements, opportunities, and processes.
      • Assist and/or develop higher/alternative education opportunities that focus on non-English speaking students.
    • Family and Community Engagement:

      • Act as a liaison between the school and families, providing support in the family’s preferred language.
      • Facilitate communication between parents and school staff, ensuring that parents understand their child’s progress and school programs.
      • Organize workshops, informational sessions, and resources for parents on academic, social, and emotional topics.
    • Collaboration with Teachers and School Staff:

      • Work with teachers to identify students in need of additional support.
      • Develop and implement individualized support plans for students with learning, social, or emotional challenges.
      • Provide teachers with professional development and strategies to better support bilingual and multilingual students in the classroom.
      • Serve as a part of the IEP and/or Problem Solving/MTSS teams, as needed.
      • Monitor and maintain student 504 plans as necessary.
      • Assist in the facilitation of standardized testing to include ACCESS, SAT, ACT and AAPPL testing as/if necessary.
    • Cultural Competency:

      • Promote cultural awareness and understanding among students and staff.
      • Develop and implement programs that celebrate diversity and encourage inclusion.
      • Address issues of bias, discrimination, and cultural misunderstanding.
    • Record-Keeping and Documentation:

      • With the assistance from office professionals, maintain and update student records and documentation (i.e. red folders) in both languages as required by school policies and regulations.
      • Track progress, interventions, and outcomes for students receiving counseling services.
      • Report any mandatory disclosures, such as child abuse or neglect, to the appropriate authorities.
      • Assist with translation services, as appropriate for student services and family communication.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Certified Evaluation Plan.
