SUMMARY: Evaluates communicative disorders and swallowing disorders, and administers speech therapy treatments for inpatients, outpatients, and/or skilled nursing facilities with impaired functional abilities for adult, geriatric, and some pediatric patients following established policies and protocols. The duties of this position require the exercise of courtesy and patience in speaking with and assisting patients, families, and others in order to maintain good public relations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs patient evaluations to determine the degree of communicative or swallowing impairment and prognosis for treatment.
- Establishes a plan of treatment and implements specific treatment techniques based on patient diagnosis.
- Documents evaluation and treatment progress, modifying therapy as needed and providing discharge information.
- Consults frequently with patient, family, and other medical staff members to coordinate patient’s total treatment plan and facilitate discharge.
- Recommends patient referrals to other disciplines as needed.
- Counsels with patient and family regarding results of evaluation and ongoing therapy and teaches patient and family home programs as necessary for continued patient progress and support.
- Provides clinical and consultative services as required at other facilities.
- Assists in developing and implementing new diagnostic and rehabilitation programs.
- Performs various routine tasks and duties such as posting charges, scheduling appointments, preparing reports, and assisting in transporting and moving patients.
- Education of patient, family, and other professionals in instituted and documented; education is provided in a manner that effectively meets the needs of the learner.
- Conducts in-service education and training programs for other hospital personnel, as well as community health programs as directed.
- Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury-accident to Manager.
- Other duties as assigned by Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent
- State licensure and certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
- Proficient in speech therapy techniques and patient care
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Skills in patient assessment and early intervention strategies
