The Teacher-Librarian ensures that students and staff are effective users of information and promotes a lifelong love of reading.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK :
The Teacher-Librarian coordinates an exemplary library-media program, offering a relevant collection that supports the curriculum, up-to-date computers that provide access to the collection and the Internet, and programs for processing and communicating information. The Teacher-Librarian maintains an attractive, organized, and welcoming Library Media Center, providing physical and intellectual access to materials in all formats.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
Certified library media specialists, teacher-librarians, are essential for the success of exemplary library media programs. They know their students' interests and ability levels and promote literacy, knowledge and curiosity. Every child is encouraged to read for personal growth and lifelong learning. Teacher-librarians are approachable, flexible, and persistent. They provide guidance on curricular goals and collaborate with teachers in planning and teaching information literacy and content related objectives for lessons. They raise expectations, increase awareness of the resources and provide opportunities for enriched learning. The teacher-librarian is the essential link between the school community and limitless student learning. As leaders in technology, teacher-librarians model integrated lessons and use the full range of techniques and technologies to promote learning. They help teachers design lessons that use technology as a way of motivating students and increasing access to information.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
The employee works with groups of students and on a one-on-one basis. Students include those who may be physically and mentally handicapped, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and culturally different. Supervision and instructional responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 45 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student's safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to lift materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.

In addition to helping students learn research- and subject-area content and skills, the teacher-librarian collaborates with teachers to develop and team teach high-quality lessons and units of study.
