Position Title:  BUS DRIVER – Relief Driver

Department:     Transportation

Reports To:       Transportation Director

 

JOB DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, the School Bus Relief Driver operates school buses and/or other District vehicles to transport children to and from school and related activities in a safe, timely and economical manner. Duties assigned to employee include cleaning of buses, and inspecting the vehicle to insure safe opera­tion. Safety and welfare of the students is always the top priority. The School Bus Relief Driver works under the supervision of the Transportation Director.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Operates the vehicle in accordance with Oregon Revised Statutes, Department of Motor Vehicle Code, School Bus Driver's Manual, and District policies.
  2. Attends all meetings and seminars scheduled by supervisor.
  3. Maintains a neat, clean, and courteous presence while on duty.
  4. Reports immediately any mechanical trouble, tire problems, inoperable safety equipment, or other questionable item to supervisor or the District mechanic.
  5. Accepts the responsibility of transporting school-age children safely under all types of conditions.
  6. Applies energy conservation and maintains cost effectiveness measures while operating a school bus.
  7. Conducts a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and reports any deficiencies in equipment to the proper authority immediately.
  8. Maintains the assigned vehicle by cleaning items such as: windshield (inside and outside), mirrors, light lenses, floors, seats.
  9. Reports any problems or safety hazards which exist or occur on routing, such as: traffic, stops, physical barriers, students (both on and off the bus). 
  10. Maintains a current and correct route schedule - STOPS AND TIMES.
  11. Greets students in a pleasant and friendly manner at bus stops.
  12. Maintains a safe, orderly atmosphere on the bus at all times by seeking compliance with District policies through persuasion, verbal warnings, or completing discipline slips.
  13. Administers first aid as required and takes immediate emergency action in serious illnesses.
  14. Completes daily maintenance checklist accurately as appropriate.
  15. Exercises good judgment and discretion in operating a vehicle in all weather and traffic conditions.
  16. Loads and operates all chair lifts provided for the transportation of the special child.
  17. Acquires the knowledge to tie down and secure wheelchairs so that they can be transported safely.
  18. Fulfills other duties as assigned.
  19. Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required for the position.
  20. Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.
  21. Relief driver must have ability to drive all routes and drive in relief of any bus driver with very little advance notice.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

School Bus Drivers have a considerable amount of contact with students and are required to maintain discipline on the bus in order to ensure the safety of students. Exposure to inclement weather and the hazards associated with vehicular travel are routine for this position. The School Bus Driver - Special Programs must be able to deal with physically, emotionally, and mentally handicapped students of varying ages in a stress-free, mature, and positive manner. The employee must also be able to lift, carry or otherwise assist students weighing up to 100 pounds on and off the bus. The employee must have the physical ability to carry or drag a 125 pound weight 30 feet in 30 seconds.  Must meet physical requirements for a bus driver as outlined in ORS.581.053.0040.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Laws, rules and regulations governing school transportation.
  • Safe driving techniques and motor vehicle laws.
  • Operation of school bus.
  • Proper procedures to follow in case of an emergency.
  • Defensive driving techniques.

 

Skills and Abilities:

Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Possess an appropriate valid Oregon Class B Commercial driver's license issued by State of Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possess a driving record that conforms to the requirements of the State Department of Education for the issue of a School Bus Driver's Certifi­cate.
  • Successfully pass a medical examination for School Bus Driver.
  • Participate in School Bus Driver's Training Program.
  • Successfully complete defensive driving training.
  • Successfully complete classroom and on-the-road vehicle operation training.
  • Successfully complete first aid training; carry an up-to-date first aid card.
  • Successfully complete and apply in-service training practices.
  • Read, understand, and apply written instructions found in route books and District policies and procedures.
  • Relate to students in a pleasant, courteous, and friendly manner.
  • Maintain a safe driving record with District or personal vehicles.
  • Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace.
  • Learn to deal with bodily fluids.
  • Possess a valid Oregon Driver's License and maintain an insurable status for automobile liability and coverage.
  • Be sensitive and alert to the special needs of special needs and/or emotionally disturbed children.
  • Accept the responsibility of transporting school-age special needs children safely under all types of conditions.
  • Treat all ages and groups firmly, fairly, and without prejudice or partiality; have extra patience and display personal warmth for the special needs child.
  • Have the ability to communicate the administrative policies applicable to Special Programs to parents as well as teachers and educational assistants in a manner compatible with the intent of such policies.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent. Basic ability to use grammar, spelling, punctuation, fractions, decimals and commercial arithmetic is required. This position requires no prior work experience. Prior experience with Special Programs students or substitute driver experience with the District is preferred.

 

The position requires general knowledge of some technical procedures or work activity. Working knowledge of School District practices or basic policies may be necessary. Job proficiency can be acquired in six months to one year.

 

 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:

  • Possess an appropriate valid Oregon Class B Commercial driver's license issued by State of Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles and maintain an insurable status for automobile and liability coverage.
  • Possess a driving record that conforms to the requirements of the State Department of Education for the issue of a School Bus Driver's Certifi­cate.
  • Possess current First Aid card.
