Position Title:        OUTSIDE SERVICES MECHANIC

Department:         Maintenance

Reports To:            Outside Services Manager

 

JOB DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, the Outside Services mechanic inspects equipment for repairs and deficiencies, diagnoses malfunctions to determine cause, and adjusts, repairs, replaces or modifies automotive equipment, parts and auxiliary systems. The Outside Services Mechanic is primarily responsible for diagnosing malfunctions, performing journey level repairs on gasoline and diesel equipment, including engine and road-testing equipment to ensure safe operating conditions. After completion of an initial orientation period, work is performed without direct supervision. Repair procedures and detailed in automotive stationary equipment manuals and specifications prepared by the District or by equipment manufacturers. Assignments are usually received from the Outside Services Manager and/or Shop Foreman either verbally or in written work orders. The Outside Services Mechanic works under the supervision of the Outside Services Manager or designee.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Conducts inspections of equipment in the field or in the shop to determine safety status or to identify potential causes of equipment malfunction.
  1. Conducts visual inspections of equipment in the shop to identify items not on the complaint list which many need repair or replacement and determines items needing immediate attention.
  1. Performs diagnostic inspections of equipment in the shop to identify items not on the complaint list which many need repair or replacement and determines items needing immediate attention.
  1. Performs scheduled maintenance and all repairs on District generators. 
  1. Talks with equipment operators, drives and operates vehicles or uses diagnostic test equipment to identify problems and malfunctions.
  1. Initiates orders for parts or equipment using parts books and other sources including contacting vendors to determine availability of parts.
  1. Performs major repairs in the shop and minor repairs in the field on a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, snow plows, snow blowers, tracts, backhoes, lawn mowers, air compressors and site back-up generators.
  1. Operates engine analyzer and tune-up equipment and other electrical, electronic or mechanical testing or equipment repair tools.
  1. Repairs or replaces equipment components such as engines, automatic and manual transmissions, power trains, differentials, and axles including gears, carburetors and fuel injector systems, electrical or electronic ignition and electrical generation and transmission systems, air compression systems and lines, engine cooling and air conditioning systems, suspension systems and hydraulic braking systems; cleans tools and equipment; keeps work area clean.
  1. Coordinates all maintenance and fleet vehicle services.
  1. Applies safety procedures to all facets of work.
  1. Maintains records of work performed by recording nature of repair, labor hours and parts used in making repairs.
  1. Drives equipment in and out of repair shop.
  1. Operates and road tests repaired vehicles to ensure proper operation.
  1. Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles.
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  1. Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.
  1. Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in heated and unheated areas and which may include working outdoors during inclement and adverse weather conditions. Work also involves exposure to exhaust fumes and chemicals such as gasoline, oil and antifreeze. The employee is responsible for knowing and applying safety precautions when in the work area, when working with equipment and in lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Significant physical abilities include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, hearing conversations and other sounds, near/far visual, acuity/depth perception.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge:

  • Standard trade practices, terminology and methods used in the repair and maintenance of automotive and technical equipment and use of automotive tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Construction and operation of automotive electrical systems.
  • Principles of construction and operation of internal combustion engines.
  • Methods and tools used in the repair of gasoline and diesel automotive and allied equipment including engines, transmissions power trains, fuel and ignition systems, air and mechanical brakes and suspension systems.
  • Safety hazards and necessary precautions required to work around, in and under vehicles or to work with petroleum-based chemicals, solvents and exhaust fumes.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Skillfully use tools and operate diagnostic and power equipment employed in the repair and adjustment of engines and components.
  • Locate and repair defects in motor equipment.
  • Weld lightweight and heavyweight metal using gas and electric welders as required
  • Change and repair tires.
  • Accurately diagnose equipment malfunctions using mechanical, electrical and electronic testing equipment.
  • Repair automotive equipment and auxiliary electrical, electronic, mechanical or structural components.
  • Perform diagnostic or mechanical repair work independently at the journey level without direct supervision in the shop or in the field.
  • Read, understand, interpret and apply instruction and procedures in repair manuals to work performed.
  • Use welding and other shop equipment such as grinders.
  • Work safely around noisy machinery, gasoline and other petroleum products, exhaust and welding fumes and work in heated and unheated areas.
  • Safely lift and carry heavy parts and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Repair equipment in the field requiring exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Work irregular hours periodically.
  • Accurately maintain vehicle maintenance records
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor and vehicle operators.
  • Lead and participate in the work of co-workers as required in the position.
  • Possess the appropriate Oregon Driver’s License and maintain an insurable status for automobile and liability coverage.
  • Adhere to the federal requirements for a drug-free workplace.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

High school diploma and four years of experience as a journey level equipment mechanic; or substituting successful completion of an automotive mechanic’s apprenticeship program for up to two years of the experience; to demonstrate a safe driving record; and possession of standard mechanic’s tools.

 

This position requires thorough knowledge of several technical procedures or work activity areas and ability to train or supervise others in such activity. In-depth knowledge of work-related School District policies and practices is necessary. Job learning time may range beyond twelve months; proficiency can be acquired in six months.
