Why this role matters:
The Head Nurse is responsible for supervising the health room, nurse(s), and EMT as well as providing health care to all campers and staff within the guidelines of the Bender JCC of Greater Washington.
Core Responsibilities include:
- Provide healthcare to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers. Collaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needs.
- Supervise all other nurses and medical staff working within the health room.
- Follow healthcare policies and procedures as described in the standing orders and medical program.
- Review all medical policies with volunteer doctor and Camp Director to ensure licensing by county, state and American Camp Association (ACA). Comply with the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and ACA standards.
- Conduct a staff orientation session on medical, health, and safety services.
- Inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment and set up the health room prior to the start of camp.
- Review camper and staff medical files prior to camp. Contact parents for specific follow-up questions.
- Keep all medications used by campers and staff.
- Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
- Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
- Prepare and record insurance and incident report forms as required by the state and Bender JCC.
- Oversee first aid procedures and supplies. Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including in camp vehicles, kitchens, offices, pools, activity areas, and out-of-camp trips.
- Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions of the camp. Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp.
- Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
- Attend all orientation sessions and staff meetings.
Qualifications
Qualifications include:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a license as required by the state of Maryland.
- CPR and First Aid certified with experience in First Aid and Emergency Management and training in using AED.
- Community health knowledge.
- Experience working with illnesses and injuries in both children and adults.
- Knowledge and understanding of common childhood illnesses and allergies and how they must be treated and accommodated in camp.
- Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with parents, children, and peers.
- Ability to communicate verbally, in writing, and electronically with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.
- Prior experience and comfort with working with school aged children with a wide range of abilities.
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards within the camp program.
- Ability to move equipment and supplies as required.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Knowledge of typical development in school-aged children.
Priority will be given to candidates who are available the entire camp season starting on June 16 going through mid-August
Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $14,000-16,000 (total pay for the regular camp season). Salary is determined based on experience including previous experience at Lessans Camp JCC.
