POSITION SUMMARY
The shop manager supports the teaching mission of the School of Engineering by ensuring a functional and safe shop and laboratory spaces and providing instructional support to various labs and courses where students use shop facilities. The shop manager is an essential resource for students who need instruction on using equipment and advice on designing for manufacturability, and for faculty who need support with various laboratory, demonstration, and research endeavors
Requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The primary duties of the shop manager, include, but are not limited to,
- managing and organizing fabrication equipment, tools, and stock material in the shop;
- order /stock / install components, equipment, and consumables;
- repair / replace damaged or broken equipment;
- maintain a clean work environment;
- instructing and supervising students on safety and the proper use of all shop equipment;
- maintaining records of shop training;
- support instruction of courses, such as MENG-1520 Intro to ME Design Lab and MENG-3180 Manufacturing Processes Lab;
- overseeing the student workers assigned to the shop;
- advising students’ fabrication efforts on projects (especially ME capstone design, ME Junior Design, and Discovery Day) by supervising and assisting the operation of machines (manual and CNC);
- building parts and assemblies via machining, sheet metal work, welding and carpentry;
- providing support to faculty in their shop needs;
- maintaining / troubleshooting / fixing equipment throughout the School of Engineering including including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering teaching labs;
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Competency Statement(s)
- Experience in engineering design practices and troubleshooting and problem solving in an engineering design and manufacturing environment. Competent use of CAD and CAM software.
Education
- Four year technical degree preferred.
Experience
- Four years technical experience and experience training others in the safe use of machine shop equipment – including but not limited to CNC/manual lathe, CNC/manual mill and sheet metal machines.
