Sr. Director, R&D

The Sr. Director, R&D is a key role to Benefit ensuring that Benefit develops and maintains high quality, inclusive, and innovative formulas across all products and services. The Sr. Director of R&D oversees the R&D Formula Development and Validation teams in all facets of formula development to ensure alignment with calendarized global launches and compliance with all Benefit’s global regulations; the role is also supports future-proofing Benefit formulas by overseeing R&I activities. This role will lead a team of diverse professionals in varying states of the careers.

What You’ll Do:

• In partnership with the SVP, Global PSI, develop the formula innovation strategy.
• Partner with the Product Innovation Team to finalize project briefs based on calendarized initiatives that align with Benefit’s global launch strategy.
• Oversee formula development from approval through to production, leading the R&D team through the formula development process and providing support where needed. As needed, guide team through product shading process.
• Oversee the team collaboration and validation process for all products and services to ensure the on-time validation and compliance of all formula and internal requirements (ex: Benefit’s Buh Bye List.)
• Oversee timelines and completion of all team milestones in web-based project management system- providing leadership & troubleshooting where needed to avoid any delays. Communicate any delays to SVP of PSI along with any risks.
  
  

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in science, Colour Cosmetic Formulation, Chemistry, or equivalent
• 12-15 years of formula development with a focus on colour cosmetics and/or skincare formulation. Equivalent experience may be accepted.
• 10-12 years of experience with team leadership, specifically leading teams with a scientific focus (ex: chemistry, sciences, etc)
• Strong technical skills including formulation, raw material knowledge, and formula evaluation skills (color and texture)
• Ability to effectively review formulas and understand ingredient adjustments needed to achieve desired attributes/ texture
• In depth understanding of global industry formula requirements/guidelines
• Strong knowledge of cosmetic chemistry across all product types (emulsions, powders, anhydrous hot pours, etc.)
  
  

Schedule:

• Hybrid - requires onsite presence weekly
• This position is based out of our Global Headquarters corporate office in San Francisco, CA.
  
  

The target salary range for this position is $200,000 - $240,000 annually. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, which may include, as applicable, years of relevant experience; certifications or other professional licenses held; other legitimate, non-discriminatory business factors specific to the position; and the geographic location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will perform the job. This position is eligible to earn an annual bonus.
