Job Summary:
The Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the LTL shipping process. This role ensures that freight is moved efficiently, cost-effectively, and in accordance with customer requirements. The supervisor will lead a team of transportation coordinators and support staff to meet service levels and operational goals, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
· Manage Daily Operations:
o Oversee all LTL shipments and ensure timely and accurate delivery.
o Coordinate with transportation planners, carriers, and dispatchers to optimize route efficiency and load capacity.
o Monitor performance metrics, including on-time delivery, load planning accuracy, and freight cost management.
· Team Leadership:
o Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of coordinators, and any other personnel involved in LTL operations.
o Set performance goals and conduct regular team evaluations.
o Provide ongoing training and support to ensure team members understand best practices and company standards.
· Carrier Management:
o Build and maintain strong relationships with LTL carriers to ensure capacity availability and performance.
o Negotiate rates with carriers and ensure competitive pricing. Static, dynamic pricing, customer specific pricing and contract blanket pricing negotiations.
o Monitor carrier performance, track KPIs, and address any service issues or discrepancies.
· Customer Service:
o Act as the primary point of contact for customer inquiry escalation for LTL shipments, addressing issues such as delays, damages, and claims.
o Ensure proactive communication with customers, providing real-time updates on shipment status.
· Cost Control:
o Conduct cost comparison analysis, leverage batch rating tools to provide insights into how to best been and provide optimal profitability.
o Manage operational costs, including freight rates, accessorial charges, and fuel surcharges.
o Analyze cost data to identify opportunities for savings and efficiency improvements.
o Prepare cost reports for management and provide insights on budget adherence.
· Compliance & Safety:
o Ensure carriers adherence to DOT regulations, safety protocols, insurance and company policies.
· Technology & Reporting:
o Utilize transportation management systems (TMS) to track and monitor shipments.
o Generate and analyze daily, weekly, and monthly reports on performance, productivity, and costs.
o Recommend improvements based on data analysis to enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field (preferred).
· 3-5 years of experience in LTL or transportation operations, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory role.
· Strong knowledge of transportation management systems (TMS) and LTL routing, rate analysis tools and rate negotiation.
· Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
· Familiarity with DOT and FMCSA regulations.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and transportation software.
Working Conditions:
· Office and warehouse environments, with occasional visits to dispatch and carrier facilities.
· Must be able to work flexible hours.
· Ability to travel occasionally for carrier meetings or customer visits.
