TITLE: Library Paraprofessional
LOCATION: Bennett High School
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
DATE AVAILABLE: 2025-2026 School Year
SUMMARY
The library aide is a person trained and skilled in the areas of technical services who provides efficient operation of the library media center under the supervision of the building principal. The library aide is responsible for:
Administration of the circulation desk
Supervision of library shelves and reserve collection Preparation and processing of materials Supervision of students in the library
Oversees Secondary Library Grant with help from the High School Principal Attain a substitute license
The library aide offers basic guidance for students and faculty in the use of the library media center including the online catalog, location of items in the collection, subscription databases, library website, applications on library workstations, and multimedia equipment.
The library aide has the ability to work independently and manage continual interruptions and shifting job priorities. He or she must possess excellent computer and database skills, as well as a strong interest in working with young people.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Post-high school experience or education in the fields of libraries, computers, books, and audiovisual material is preferred, but not mandatory.
The library para must possess an interest in and affinity for direct work with young people. The position requires strong public-relation skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Administration of the circulation desk
Collects and reviews records including circulation, past due books and weeded titles.
Supervises circulation desk and circulation procedures
Prepares and distributes overdue notices, letters to parents, and lists of overdue materials for the main office
Sets up reserve collections.
Conducts annual inventory of books and AV equipment
Helps students and faculty access materials through the use of the online catalog, the library website, and other databases.
Has familiarity with the library’s print and online resources and assists members of the learning community in accessing print, electronic, and audiovisual services and materials
Assists students and faculty in setting up and using media in all formats.
Searches for and verifies bibliographic information.
Shelves and retrieves materials
Performs preliminary automated cataloging and manages processing and preparation of newly acquired materials.
Arranges for interlibrary loans and maintains appropriate interlibrary loan records and reports.
Verifies invoices against shipments and orders.
Aids in the preparation of library publications
Notifies students when reserved materials are available.
Assists in preparing bibliographies and updating links for websites and pathfinders
Assists with displays and other special projects.
Supervises and executes automated inventory.
Monitors student behavior in the library and helps to maintain a friendly, cooperative, and productive atmosphere for students, faculty and parents.
Develops and promotes good rapport in school and community
Retrieves applicable data and prepares library grants and scholarships
Performs any other related duties that may be assigned.
