The Benton County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Intermittent Court Security Deputy and is also creating an Eligibility List for any future Permanent Part-Time or additional Intermittent openings.

Hours For This Position Will Vary.

Position Summary
Coordinates the functioning of the Benton County Courts Facility by providing security and guidance for the property, courtrooms, visitors, jurors, and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions
A. Provides security to the courts’ facility and property.
A.1. Screens individuals entering the facility.
A.2. Arrests individuals that come into court with warrants.
B. Assists court defendants with information and directions regarding court proceedings, public defenders, and other court related matters.
C. Provides security and coordinates activities of jurors.
C.1. Checks in potential jurors.
C.2. Maintains boundaries between jurors and others involved in court proceedings.
C.3. Maintains presence with jurors during their deliberations.
D. Makes arrests for violations of laws and ordinances.
E. Assists Court Administration with court files.
F. Responds to emergency calls and performs emergency first aid.
G. Serves civil process.

Additional Functions
A. Attends trainings as needed.
B. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications - Training and Experience Required

Minimum Qualifications
A. Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related area; and
B. Minnesota Peace Officer License; OR
C. Equivalent combination of education/training/experience.

Preferred Qualifications
A. Active Peace Officer's license and 1 year of law enforcement experience.

Conditions of Employment
A. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
B. Must successfully complete a background check. This includes psychological, drug, and alcohol.
C. Obtain and maintain certifications and licensures.
C.1. Within six months of hire:
C.1.1. First Aid/CPR training.
C.1.2. Use of Force, firearms, and taser training.
D. Ability to work extended, evening, and weekend hours as needed.
E. Ability to travel within your daily work assignment.
F. Ability to travel within Minnesota, including extended overnight stays.
G. Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
H. Performs physical/mental demands of the work environment requirements for this position.
I. Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours, and outside regular hours as necessary.
J. Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
K. Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to private data. Any access to private data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data is being accessed, employee should take reasonable measures to ensure the private data is not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the private data must be properly stored according to county policies and the Minnesota Statutes.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Physical Demands and Working Conditions Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A. Working knowledge of local, state, and federal statutes, laws and ordinances relevant to department operations.
B. Knowledge of civil and criminal court proceedings.
C. The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and have strong positive public relations skills.
D. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
E. Ability to handle a variety of typical assignments and problems under moderate supervision within standard operating procedures.
F. Ability to apply a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents and moderate analytical ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions using generally prescribed procedures.
G. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with frequent interaction to carry out organizational programs on matters requiring cooperation, explanation and persuasion; or work requiring enforcement of laws, ordinances, policies and procedures.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions
A. Work is performed in the Courts Facility building and grounds. Headaches, eyestrain, and other related occupational hazards reflect the most common potential for injury when working in the office.
B. Normal hearing and correctable vision required. Must possess physical strength and ability to restrain and control persons and ability to physically defend self.
C. This position requires the ability to lift or assist in lifting injured persons.
D. Duties can include prolonged period of standing or walking.
E. Likelihood of verbal abuse and violence exposure in the line of duty.

Hours of Work
A. Monday-Friday 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M., varies as needed.

Equipment Utilized
A. Office equipment, computer, Law enforcement equipment and tools.
