The Benton County Community Development Department is looking to hire a County Building Official!

JOB SUMMARY

The Building Official is responsible for managing, coordinating, and supervising the activities and operations of the Building Division within the Community Development Department. This includes plan review, issuance of building permits, building construction inspection services and activities, coordinating assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies, as well as providing highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Community Development.

The successful Building Official is an integral part of an inter-disciplinary team that works seamlessly to deliver countywide customer services, as well as community health and safety across, and in support of, all program areas, including Building and Development Services.

Annual salary range of:

  • $96,194.59 - $131,175.20 
  • This position is eligible for up to two salary raises within your first year. Increases may be given at the end of the 6 month probationary period, depending on starting salary and at the 1 year anniversary, as long as your performance is in good standing! Increases are given until the maximum of the salary range is reached.
  • Note: salary placement will be based on your level of directly related experience and education consistent with Oregon's pay equity law.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position (PM45):
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, building technology, construction management, planning, geography, public administration, or related field from an accredited college or university; AND
  • 5 years of professional work experience in engineering, architecture, building technology, construction management, planning, geography, public administration, or a closely related field,
    • 2 years of which are managerial or supervisory experience. (Supervisory experience includes the authority to hire, terminate, assign, reward, and discipline other employees.)

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.  There is no substitute for the supervisory experience.

Special Requirements: 
The successful candidate for this position must meet the following requirements within 6 months of hire:
  • This position requires a Valid Oregon Driver's License and may require use of a personal vehicle.
  • Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC)
  • Oregon Building Official Certification or ICC Equivalent
  • Must meet ONE of the certification requirements outlined in Path A, Path B below (or be able to obtain Path A or Path B certifications within 6-months of hire), or an equivalent combination of certifications, as determined by the Community Development Director.

PATH A:
• Oregon “A” Level Mechanical Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon “A” Level Structural Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon Residential Mechanical Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon Residential Structural Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon Residential Plumbing Inspector
• Oregon Residential Electrical Inspector

OR

PATH B:
• Oregon “A” Level Plans Examiner with Fire Life Safety or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon “A” Level Structural Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon “A” Level Mechanical Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon Residential Mechanical Inspector or ICC Equivalent
• Oregon Residential Structural Inspector or ICC Equivalent

Note: Any individual holding the ICC equivalencies must obtain the commensurate State of Oregon certifications within 6 months of employment.
 
The Ideal Candidate
  • Will bring experience working as a building official or similar role with a local government or other public agency. 
  • Will have outstanding communication skills, including written, verbal, interpersonal and public servant leadership.
