Purpose:
To provide seasonal assistance to the Engineering Division for Benton County Public Works Department. This position is responsible for performing a variety of entry-level duties related to engineering and surveying.
Hours of Work:
Normal work hours for this position will occur between 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
A. Assists in surveying of construction projects; learns and operates surveying and engineering equipment; placing stakes/markers and clears brush; acts as flag person; takes traffic counts.
B. Assists in inspection and documentation of construction projects through observation, written documentation, and software entry.
C. Assists in the verification of construction materials by sampling and testing soils, aggregates, bituminous, concrete, and other materials both in the field and laboratory settings.
D. Assists in topographic survey, construction survey and other data collection for current and future projects as well as inventory items.
E. Performs data entry into engineering software.
F. Maintains engineering equipment, surveying equipment and supplies.
G. Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
Additional Functions
A. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
A. High School Diploma and be at least 18 years of age.
B. Currently enrolled or past schooling related to civil engineering field.
C. Experience using computers for workplace/business/school functions.
License and Certification:
A. Possess a valid Minnesota Drivers License at or within 30-days of employment.Physical Requirements:
A. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 50 pounds).
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability:
A. Must possess ability to solve problems and determine appropriate course of action.
B. Must possess the ability to perform simple mathematical computations.
C. Must possess ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrams or schedule forms.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A. Knowledge of engineering and survey practices.
B. Knowledge of engineering maps and records.
C. Ability to make required mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
D. Ability to learn use of technical engineering instruments.
E. Ability to operate a pickup truck.
F. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Communication Skills:
A. Requires the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with Public Works staff, other county employees, contractors, and the public.
Environmental Adaptability:
A. Work is normally required to be performed both in the office (approximately 15%) and in the field (approximately 85%).
B. Headaches, eyestrain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and related occupational hazards associated with computer work reflect the most common potential for injury within the office.
C. Environmental conditions include heat, cold, wetness, and other related occupational hazards associated with engineering duties when in the field.
