JOB SUMMARY:
The Quality Control Technician is responsible for reviewing and evaluating both traditional Hybrid-Fiber-Coax (HFC) and Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) construction projects, including: using the plan design against new build, span and drop replacements (if needed), risers, aerial installations, bonding and grounding of the strand (messenger), proper installation of any ADSS self-supporting fiber-optic cable, splice cases and cabinets, splitters and XWDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing), underground installations (bores, vaults, and trenches) and MDU lockbox replacements.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Before work begins, perform site surveys of as-built and proposed projects and complete associated red-line documentation to guarantee that the work to be done is doable.
- Perform construction inspections for quality control in accordance with customer’s Technical Quality Assurance (TQA) standards.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Verify that property restoral is consistent with customer’s standard practice.
- Operate test equipment as needed to verify optical and RF power levels are set as designed.
- Document (in still image and/or video) that aerial construction, underground vaults and cabinets have been built and installed as specified by customer.
- Prepare work orders to resolve any element in the plant that does not meet specifications.
- Communicate with Project Manager or designated Supervisor regarding concerns about construction progress.
- Ability to work weekends or a second shift as the business needs dictate.
- Perform emergency locates as necessary.
- Adhere to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable.
- Know, understand, and follow company policies.
- Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Five (5) years of experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the outside plant (OSP) that supports telecommunications services (Telephone, CATV, and High- Speed Internet)
- 2 years of communications service drop & home installation experience required.
- 1 years Maintenance Technician or equivalent work experience
- Construction work experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of safe construction practices used in building aerial and underground communications networks
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical thinking skills.
- Knowledge of standard industry practices, work orders, and scheduling processes
- Knowledge of N.E.C and N.E.S. C. for communications for outside plant and construction practice and inside and around buildings.
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language to communicate with employees, customers, and suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straight forward, and professional manner.
- Ability to read and interpret area maps, general system layouts from blueprints and system maps.
- Ability to use the following hand tools: electric drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers.
- Ability to walk over all types of terrain in all kinds of weather while carrying tools and equipment, including ladders, and tool belts.
- Ability to perform job from high places (i.e., poles, ladders, and roofs)
- Ability to safely use weight-bearing equipment (such as safety harness and ladders) within the maximum weight limitations of that equipment.
- Ability to accurately measure distances, using tapes or other measuring devices.
- Ability to take and produce clear and sharp photographic and video documentation of work performed in the field.
- Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx. 32 ft. high and 50 pounds)
- Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires.
- Ability to operate appropriate computer or test equipment associated with position (e.g., signal level meters, ohm meters, etc.)
- Ability to work while standing 50-70% of the time.
- Ability to operate machinery used for underground/overhead cable installation.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics and electronics
- Industry and vendor specific certifications and training (NCTI, SCTE, BCT/E) preferred.
- Must have proficient working knowledge with computer programs such as Microsoft Office, MS Outlook, and computer operating systems.
- Very strong organization, communication, and leadership skills
- Problem-solving skills necessary to assess technical problems, estimate work hours, and identify required materials.
- Perform duties independently by exercising discretion and sound judgment.
- Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record within company required standards.

- May need to work in a confined space, poorly ventilated areas such as attics, basements, crawlspaces and/or manholes.
- May be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, insects, rodents, pets, and cleaning solutions.
- Work outdoors in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day or night.
- Work performed may be near power lines and electricity.
- Work performed may be at various heights above ground on telephone/power poles.
- May need to travel in inclement weather.
