JOB SUMMARY: To facilitate construction, operation and maintenance of the services for transmitting power from distribution points to consumers within the City of Benton.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Frames and sets poles, installs anchors, and strings distribution wiring.
- Installs transformers and transformer banks, capacitors, reclosers, line switches and arrestors.
- Operates bucket trucks, universal trucks and related equipment necessary for power line construction under supervision of a Journeyman Lineman or 4th year Apprentice Lineman.
- Serves in on-call duty for response to power interruptions and off-hour emergencies.
- Assists lineman as understudy learning techniques of construction or reworking of electric lines.
- Operates hand and power tools necessary for construction.
- Works de-energized primary circuits both overhead and underground under the supervision of Journeyman Lineman.
- Works on de-energized secondary under close supervision of Journeyman Lineman.
- Begin to read and understand Safety Manual
- Develop climbing skills
- Assist linemen in care and knowledge of bucket/digger derricks, track hoe, skylift
- Know the proper care and maintenance of safety equipment such as rubber gloves, hot sticks and cover up materials
- Learn to use hot sticks (with rubber gloves)
- Learn basic substation equipment
- Learn basic underground equipment and circuitry layouts
- All job assignments shall be based on an individual basis according to the apprentice’s competence and skill level as determined by the lineman in charge.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED and 12-18 months of college related courses or any equivalent combination of experience and training in working around high-voltage power distribution systems.
Current class A (Commercial) driver's license that must be maintained for the duration of employment in this position
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Basic knowledge of techniques of working with and around high voltage lines
- Basic knowledge of safety requirements
- Good knowledge on maintenance requirements for heavy trucks used in line repair
- Skill in basic mathematical calculations including whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
- Skill in safe operation of bucket truck, universal truck and related equipment
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools
- Ability to solve problems
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor including climbing poles in adverse weather conditions
- Ability to observe obstructions and problems at work site
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions

- Perform any duty without the supervision of a 4th Year Apprentice or Lineman
