ABOUT NWACS :

The mission of Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter is to provide a safe haven, high-quality care and hope for the future to children who have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Since 1993, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter (NWACS) has cared for more than 12,000 children in crisis from throughout the state of Arkansas. As the largest emergency children’s shelter in the state, NWACS annually serves hundreds of children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Our 32-bed, state-of-the-art complex offers an array of trauma-informed services including onsite counseling and therapy, medical services, and a school. The combination of these features creates a stable, secure and loving environment where children who have experienced abuse, abandonment or neglect can begin to heal.

POSITION PURPOSE :

Reporting to Bentonville Public Schools and the NWACS Director of Education, this position works directly with foster youth at Horizon Academy, located at the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter. The Intervention Teacher in connection with the appropriate teaching staff will work to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills, documenting student progress / activities / outcomes, addressing specific educational needs of individual students and creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment for each student.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Create an atmosphere for students that operationalizes our mission.
  • Provide individualized high quality supplemental instruction in math and / or literacy.
  • Provide active teaching activities that are tailored to each child’s current educational level, individual strengths and emotional needs.
  • Directly provide day-to-day educational instruction and classroom management and work with others who also provide care for the children.
  • Maintain accurate student records.
  • Maintain an orderly and safe classroom environment.
  • Build an environment that considers all aspects of wellness : nutrition, health, safety, decisions and choices, mental, as well as physical well-being.
  • Monitor and document daily the progress of all children in the classroom and take appropriate actions to increase each child’s progress.
  • Sustain relationships that result in active student engagement in the learning process.
  • Attend required staff and district meetings.
  • Attend and participate in mandatory training, staff meetings, and all other events, as required.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Education.
  • Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes :

  • Maintain a valid Arkansas State Certification as a Teacher with certifications in English and Math.
  • Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university
  • ESL certification
  • Experience in Special Education preferred
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, cooperative, working relationships with others
  • Prior experience implementing Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and Conscious Discipline preferred
  • Flexible and adaptive style; an individual who can positively serve the varying needs of children who have experienced trauma
  • Maintain appropriate personal and professional boundaries
  • Working Conditions and Environment / Physical Demands :

  • Works in a school environment
  • Physical stamina and agility required to care for children
  • Physical ability to use authorized techniques for management of aggressive behaviors and assist students in emergency situations
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Must pass all criminal history and child maltreatment background checks.
  • Must submit to pre-employment drug screen as well as random drug screens when directed
